Samuel Edmund Probart Jones or Samuel Probart Hammond Jones was born in 1838 or 25 May 1839 and living at home in 1851 age 12. He Edmund Probartemigrated in 1855, and ran away to the goldfields when a midshipman. ?index of ship’s deserters? Other brothers came out to follow him. In 1865 in Victoria he married Annie Sear, a redhead who later lived with Aldersey Heritage’s parents. Annie Charlotte Seear 8 Feb 1842 Port Nicholson, NZ, was daughter of William James Seear and Susan. She died when daughter only five and Samuel did not remarry. He made good money on the goldfields and took on the Semaphore Hotel or Jetty Hotel Semaphore for some years. He was barman at the Jetty Hotel in 1885, when it was referred to as Jones’s hotel in court. SA Register, 19 March 1885] He was in the Kew Hotel, Company Street Kew, Semaphore in 1886 1887 1890 with brother Frederick. [Adelaide Observer 17 Dec 1887] He lost money it is said because he sent customers home if they had enough to drink. The Kew Hotel in Short Street opened in 1879 and lost its licence in 1909 following a Local Option Poll. Samuel late of Semaphore, died 21 July 1893 age 57 at Beachport, 38 years in the colony.
