Biography

Nancy Jane Collins Hager was reportedly born in either Sandy River, Floyd County, Kentucky or Virginia. She was the daughter of David Collins and Mary “Polly” Dale. She was the paternal granddaughter of Valentine Collins and Dicey Gibson and maternal granddaughter of the PVT Charles Dale and Jemima Spradlin.

She was the sister of Andrew Jackson Collins, PVT George Washington Collins, PVT Hiram Herrison Collins, SGT Peter Collins and Malissa Angeline Collins.

Nancy was the mother of nine children; Jane Collins (also known as Jane Hager), Peter Collins, Malissa Ann Collins (also known as Malissa Ann Hager), an unnamed stillborn Hager daughter, Julia Ann Collins, unnamed twin Collins boys, Lucinda Linthicum Hager and Henry Hager.

Nancy married her first husband (and first cousin) Amos D. Collins on July 8, 1858 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She gave birth to a daughter Julia Ann on September 30, 1859.

In June of 1860, Nancy lived with her children Jane, Peter and Malissa Ann in the home of James and Susannah Porter Hager. (Nancy was possibly connected to Susannah through the Dale family. Reportedly, Susannah’s paternal grandfather Patrick Porter raised Arter Dale to whom Nancy's mother, Mary, was likely related. Arter Dale was supposedly either Mingo or Seneca Indian. Several of Arter's descendants married into Valentine Collins' family.) The Hager homeplace was located in the Tom’s Creek area of Johnson County, Kentucky.

She also lived with her husband Amos and daughter Julia Ann in the home of her brother George Washington Collins.

On May 1, 1861, Nancy and James Hager were both charged with adultery and fined $20.00 each (the equivalent of about $602.00 in 2021) by the Johnson County Circuit Court in Paintsville, Kentucky.

Nancy married her second husband James Hager on June 24, 1865 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

In October of 1866, Nancy was specifically addressed in the last will and testament of her husband James Hager whose health was declining.

After James' death, Nancy lived with her daughters Jane, Malissa and Lucinda near the residence of Henderson and Nancy Jane Collins Butcher. Nancy's son Peter also lived and worked nearby at the Butcher family farm.

In 1870, people who lived near Nancy included Nathaniel Ward, Morgan D. Hager (her stepson), Zach Staniford, William Sparks, Elijah Bowen, John Bowen and John Ratliff.

No census data after 1870 with Nancy and her daughters has been found. Nancy appeared in Johnson County, Kentucky Circuit Court in April of 1872 in a case involving the estate of her late husband. She passed away after April 6, 1872.

Commonwealth of Kentucky against James Hager & Nancy Collins, May 1, 1861

James Hager and Nancy were indicted on May 1, 1861 in Johnson County Circuit Court, Paintsville, Kentucky for adultery. They were both fined twenty dollars.

Petition to Beriah Magoffin, Governor of Kentucky, 1861

To His Excellency Beriah Magoffin Governor of Kentucky:

Your Petitioner Nancy Collins states that at the May Term 1861 of the Johnson Circuit Court she was fined twenty dollars under an indictment charging her with the offense of Adultery.

She says most positively she was not guilty of said offense. She says that she is a widow and has 4 (or 5?) children dependent on her for support. She was in destitute circumstances and prevailed on a neighbor to permit her to take shelter in his house.

From some cause someone became suspicious of her because of her destitute condition and caused her to be indicted & fined for the commission of an offense of which she is entirely innocent.

She says positively no witness pretended to prove the fact but the testimony introduced by the commonwealth was entirely circumstantial. She states she is poor and has no property on earth, not even a change of clothing for herself and destitute children.

She says unless your excellency will remit said fine, she will be compelled to be confined in the county jail in order to satisfy the penalties of the law because she says she has not any means whereby to obtain the money to pay said fine wherefore she prays your excellency to remit said fine and permit her to continue to endeavor to sustain herself and destitute children and will ever pray.

Nancy Collins

We the undersigned citizens of Johnson & Floyd counties are [acquainted] with Nancy Collins and believe her statements true and pray your excellency to remit said fine as we believe in justice & mercy it ought to be done.

William J. Ward v.s. Nancy Hager and others, Johnson County Circuit Court, Paintsville, Kentucky, August 5, 1869

William J. Ward was the executor of the estate of Nancy Collins Hager’s husband James Hager.

According to the June 28, 1860 census, Nancy Jane was living with her husband Amos and daughter Julia Ann in the home of George Washington (“G.W.”) Collins. If Nancy was the daughter of David and Mary Dale Collins, she was George’s sister.

On June 20, 1860, one Nancy Collins also lived with her children Jane Collins, Peter Collins and Malissa Ann Collins in the household of James and Susannah Porter Hager. (David and Mary Dale Collins’ daughter Nancy had two children named Peter Collins, Sr. and Malissa Angeline Collins.) Apparently Nancy named her children Peter and Malissa Ann after her siblings.

Nancy Jane gave birth to twin boys on July 15, 1861 in Johnson County, Kentucky. One of the boys reportedly died the following day. The other died at one month old.
