Biography

Peter Collins was the son of Nancy Collins Hager and an unknown biological father. He was the stepson of James Hager. Peter was the maternal grandson of David Collins and Mary “Polly “ Dale. He was named after his maternal uncle Peter Collins, Sr.

Peter reportedly was born in between May of 1850 and 1855. According to various records, his birthplace was Virginia or Kentucky. Johnson County, Kentucky is named as Peter's birthplace on his son Jeff's marriage record. Peter's son Edward's funeral record shows that he was originally from Pike County, Kentucky. However he isn’t listed on the Pike County, Kentucky births from 1852-1859.

In the United States Census of 1860, it shows that Peter lived in Johnson County, Kentucky with his mother and siblings in the home of James and Susannah Porter Hager.

He was specifically addressed in the last will and testament of his stepfather James Hager in October of 1866.

The United States Census of 1870 shows that Peter lived with Henderson Butcher and his wife Nancy Jane Collins Butcher in Johnson County, Kentucky. Also in the household was Henderson's mother Arta Dotson Butcher (widow of Jacob Butcher and paternal third great-grandmother of Loretta Webb Lynn). Peter was recorded as working at the Butcher family's farm which was located near the home of his mother and siblings.

Peter could read but not write.

In August of 1874, Peter was listed not as Peter Collins but Peter Elliott on his son Columbus' birth record.

For the United States of 1880 Census, Peter was recorded as head of household in the John's Creek area of Floyd County, Kentucky. He could read but not write.

In 1891, he married Sarah Jane Bowen in Martin County, Kentucky in the home of Lafe Mills. Both Lafe Mills and John Spriggs were witnesses to this union.

According to the United States Census of 1900, Peter and his son "Eddie" (aged 4) were living at the residence of their cousin Mitchell Perry and his wife Nancy (Williamson) Perry of Martin County, Kentucky. The Perry children were sons Jesse (aged eighteen), R.J. (aged sixteen), daughter Martha J. (aged thirteen) and son Marian (aged eleven).

Peter and his parents reportedly were all originally from Kentucky. He was employed as a day laborer and could not read or write.

In 1910, Peter and his wife lived in Whitehouse, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Peter was enumerated in the 1920 census. He and his wife Anna lived in Greasy, Johnson County, Kentucky. He was described as a white male, seventy years of age and originally from Virginia (present day West Virginia). His parents were reportedly from Virginia. Peter was a farmer, owned his home and could not read or write.

Peter last resided in the Boons Camp area of Johnson County, Kentucky. According to a book by the late Billie Edyth Ward, Peter was murdered in the Hurricane Creek area in the 1920's. He was described as "a peaceable old man" and "was simply used as a target".
