Pauline (Coleman) Gates is a part of US Black heritage.
Birth
A daughter was born to Paul and Margaret Coleman on 17 September 1916 in Piedmont, Mineral County, West Virginia. Her given name was not recorded in the birth register at the time of her birth.[1]
Early life
In the 1920 census Pauline is mentioned as a toddler aged 3 years and 4 months. She is the second child of four, all under the age of 5. Mum Magaret is 25 ande father Paul 23. He is working as a janitor in the Devon club, owned by the Luk paper mill and meant for its employees. Both parents are able to read and write according to the census. In the same houshold brother in law Oliver Howard(23) is living and also a boarder named Ralph E. Kent(20) Both are working at the paper mill as laborers. All the members of the houshold are black according to the census. They're living on Fairfaxstreet in Piedmont, Mineral, West Virgina[2]
The 1930 Census[4] shows her at age 13 in the home of her parents in Piedmont Town, Mineral County, West Virginia. She is one of ten children in the home. Mysteriously, her name is given on this census as Margaret. But it is clear from the ages and the order of her siblings listed here, that this entry is for Pauline.
The 1940 census mentions Pauline as a young single woman of 23 years old working as a maid in a private home for 60 hours a week earning 150 US dollars a year. Her highest educational level is high school year 3. She lives with her parents and is the oldest sibling of the eleven still living at home. The others range in age between 18 and 7. Her father is still working as a janitor in the Devon club earning 1040 US dollars a year and her brother Edwin works as a paper loader at the Luke paper mill. The younger siblings between 17 and 7 are all attending school from 1st grade until high school year 3. They lived in a rented house on Dye street. Rent was $8.50 per month. [5]
Death
She passed away on April 9, 1987 at the age of 70.[6] She is buried at Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser, Mineral County, West Virginia, USA.[7]
