Henry Gates Sr. is a part of US Black heritage.

Henry Louis Gates, Sr. was born on June 8, 1913 in Pattersons Creek, Mineral County, West Virginia. He was the son of Edward Gates and Helen Redman.[1]

In 1920, they were farming in Frankfort, Mineral, West Virginia; their household was made up of: Edward (63) and Maud E (62), their son, Edward L (41) and Gertrude H (39), and Edward and Gertrude's children, Edward E (15), Lawrence J (12), Elmore E (10), Fred S (9), Robert B (7), Henry L (6), and Helen C (3).[2]

By 1930, their family had moved back to Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland; the Gates household was made up of: Edward (63) and Maud E (63), their son, Edward L (50) and his wife, Helen G (47), and their children, Elmore E (21), Fred (20), Robert B (18), Hinnie L (Henry L) (16), and Helen C (13).[3]

In 1940, Henry was working as a janitor in an office building; the Gates household in Cumberland was made up of: Edward L (61) and his wife, Helen G (55), their sons: Elmore (32), Fred (30), Robert (28), Heinie (Henry L) (27), his father, Edward (82) and his brother-in-law, Harry P Redman (45).[4]

In 1950, Henry was working as a paper loader in a paper mill; the Gates household in Piedmont, Mineral, West Virginia was included his wife,Pauline (33) and son, Paul E age 4. [5]

Henry was working for C & P Telephone Co. of Cumberland in October 1940 when he, like most of the men in the United States, reported to their local Draft Boards to register for the World War II Draft. Henry was still living in the same household as his mother at 505 Greene Street in Cumberland, Alleganey County, Maryland. He was described as a 5'8" Negro with brown eyes, black hair and black complexion. As you can see in his picture, he was slender at 130 pounds.[6]

He was drafted in World War II and inducted on 21 March 1941 at Baltimore, Maryland.[7] He was discharged at Camp Lee, Virginia, in July 1943 as a result of disability from an injury that occurred prior to entry into service.[8]

He worked at the Luke paper mill in Luke, Maryland, across the river from Piedmont.[9] The history of this paper mill is discussed on the WikiTree page Piedmont Paper Mill.

He passed away on December 24, 2010 in New Jersey.[10] He is buried at Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser, Mineral County, West Virginia, USA.[11]
