Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. Here is my family tree.
My particular interest at the moment is the evolution of families from Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha. My 6g grandmother, Sophy was taken to Saint Helena as a slave by the Honourable East India Company. Her granddaughter, Sarah Bowers relocated to Tristan da Cunha as part of a wife purchase agreement, from where the family branched out to Australia, South Africa and the USA. Family members took part in the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War and the Boer War on both sides.

Secondary interest is the Learmonth and King families of Perthshire, Scotland. King family members departed Perthshire in the years following the last Jacobite uprising, which may have been purely co-incidental, and were early settlers in New Zealand and Australia.

Hi Steven

I came across a couple of your profiles as I was researching Thomas Hill Applegate https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Applegate-3291, recently created as an extension of my family by marriage. I've added his profile link to a couple of your profiles - I'm not sure if there are any more where he's mentioned.

I know very little about him, so if you have any other info, please feel free to add it!

Leaders of the US and World Black Heritage Projects have advised me that they consider the use of 'A Slave' for ancestral names to be dehumanising and demeaning to descendants of those slaves.

Not wishing to cause anybody stress in their family research, I will adjust the surnames of Saint Helena slaves that I have identified to avoid possible distress. Each of those profiles will be listed and maintained under the Category 'Saint Helena'.

For those people upset about the use of surname 'A Slave' in my profiles, I sincerely apologise. There is no intention on my part to 'dehumanise' descendants of slave ancestors. As a descendant of slaves from Southern India and Africa, with no known or acknowledged surnames, I have developed an interest in pursuing their histories which only exist under the term 'slave'. At the urging of WikTree adminstrators, I will cease creating slave profiles. For anybody interested in finding their Saint Helena descendants, slave or otherwise, feel free to contact me and I will forward any information I have.

Ou can only state it as it was, no need concelaing the truth. I am happier to know the truth than stuck on a brick wall. I too have slave ancestors and proud they were all finally free to roam God's given planet.

Steven,

I know that you are working in a different area, thus the US Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves doesn't apply. I just wanted to mention this and see if you had touched base with the US Black Heritage project.

Kay,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. My first intention was just to get the Saint Helena slaves who had been 'baptised' listed in a form that was trackable, so I could follow subsequent marriages and births but I hadn't fully considered naming conventions, as there didn't appear to be any consistency in the Saint Helena records. I will certainly have a look at the US Black Heritage project for comparisons/suggestions, etc. Thanks for your interest. Steve B.

One suggestion is that if you have no further information, use Unknown for the LNAB

Kudos for taking on this project! You may also want to work with the Categorization Project to create a grouping category which will help keep track of theses profiles even as the surname changes. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Categorization Connect with them through a G2G post to make them aware of your efforts.

Ronald, Thanks very much for your comments. I have listed all of these people under the 'Saint Helena' category as they are fundamental to the Saint Helena history. I am hesitant to isolate them further with a separate grouping as that would introduce a cultural appearance that does not exist on the Island. While being easily identifiable, their profiles are retained within the general population and easily followed as their names develop.

Hi Steven, please review the information on Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile. This page on Sources can help with the proper formatting. Thanks, Laura

Laura,

I stand chastised. Is there a particular profile you're concerned about or are you worried about all of the pre 1700 profiles I've created ? Steve B.

Steven, it was in no way meant to chastise you. It has been several years since you certified. The link that is posted now for Pre-1700 has been updated, it is the link that I posted. I will send you a message. Regards, Laura

Thanks Laura,

I have redone the pre-1700 certification test and checked all the links.

G'day Steven. I appear to have locked myself out of Ernest Milliner's profile (Millener-113). I'll see what needs to be done to get us in there. I have passed profile management of other family members to you. Regards, Ken.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like the England Project would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag England will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)
