Biography

Doris was born 8 May 1931, daughter of William Allan and Doris Mary Simpson.

She was the third child of William and Doris and the first following a separation in 1928 when her mother Doris left her husband and applied for a divorce. Doris was ordered home by Court Order, her divorce application failing due to lack of good cause.

On 6 May 1948 Doris Edith Simpson married George Louvain Bicknell at the District Registrar's Office in Liverpool, New South Wales. As George was AWOL from the Army, he married under the name George Louvain Palmer, the surname of his step-father. Because Doris was two days short of her 17th birthday and did not have her parents permission to marry, she married under the name of her eldest sister, Hilda Simpson.

Doris and George had seven children, five of whom were registered under names consistent with the parents marriage details. In 1957, George and Doris reverted to their correct names and a further two children were registered under the surname Bicknell.

George was diagnosed with Mesothelioma (Asbestosis) in 1990 with an anticipated life expectancy of twelve months. He passed away 12 Sep 1991. He was cremated at Springvale Crematorium in Melbourne and his remains retained by his widow Doris until her own passing on 18 Sep 1999. She was also cremated and their remains were interred together at Allambie Gardens in Nerang, Queensland, together with their eldest daughter Katie, who remained with them for life.
