Rob was born on 6 February 1950 in Lusaka, Zambia. He was the son of Douglas Wyndham Toomey Wilson Water Engineer and Ella Maude (Blackman) Wilson of P.O. Box 104, Lusaka. ^{[1] [2]} Born at 5:45 am at Lusaka European hospital; parents lived in Woodlands, Lusaka according to Baby's Record book.

Baptised on 22 October 1950 in Penge, England. Christened Congregational Church, Penge UK.^[3]

• 1953 Family departed Liverpool, England on 14 October 1953 on ship "Hector" to Cape Town.^[7]Went to live in Kasama, then from Aug 1955 to Fort Jameson (now Chipata).
• 1956/57 Family flew to UK from Lusaka. Stayed at 42 Woodville Rd, Bexhill. Returned on City of Exeter departing London, England on 31 May 1957 to Cape Town.^[8]. Jo apparently stayed in Cape Town, going to St Cyprian's school as a boarder (c/o/ Bobby Pride who lived in Milnerton, Cape). Rest of family lived in Lusaka at 6 Ely Rd, Woodlands.
• 1959 Family arrived in UK on ship "City of Port Elizabeth" from Cape Town. Arrived Tilbury (London) 23 Dec 1959 (should have been Southampton, but the ship went to the aid of a sinking ship in the Bay of Biscay). Stayed at The Bungalow, Oakley Lane, Hawkhurst (Grandma Blackman's house).^[9][10]Did a tour of Europe in Renault Dauphine, ending up in Italy to get the ship home.

• 1960 Family departed on MV Africa from Trieste, Italy to Beira, Mozambique in March 1960.
• 1962 Family arrived UK (unknown voyage) on 8 December 1962.
• 1963 Family departed Gatwick by air on 22 May 1963.
• 1966/67 Family holiday down Garden Route (South Africa) to Cape Town (see Wendy's photos); Jo then embarked on a ship (possibly the MV Africa to Italy) to go to UK, at Port Elizabeth. Passport records show entry to RSA at Beitbridge 12 Dec 66, back to Rhodesia 12 Jan 67, trip to Beira (with Falcon friends) 15-21 Jan 67, Zambia (with Doug Mouritzen?) 23 Jan. Then school by train 28 Jan 67.
• 1967 Rob departed Lusaka, Zambia on 16 September 1967, flight to Harare to stay with Bradburys before final term at Falcon College. After end of term and another stay in Harare, Rob departed Harare, Zimbabwe on 11 December 1967 by train to Cape Town. Embarked on "Pendennis Castle", arrived in Southampton, England on 1 January 1968. Parents and Wendy had left Zambia 23/9/67 by train to Bulawayo, then to Cape Town.
