Biography

Primary records show that Experience Wilson was born at Newton, Massachusetts Bay, on the 10th of November, 1696, although some sources give other dates (e.g., 10 November 1690; 29 May 1698; see "Disputed Origins" below). She was a daughter of Joseph Wilson and Deliverance (Jackson) Wilson.

She married Capt. William Williams at Newton, Massachusetts Bay, in late September of 1721[1]; she was the mother of:

Abigail Williams;
William Williams, II;
Phineas Williams;
Amariah Williams;
Jessie Williams; and 1 other

She was a sister of Deliverance (Wilson) Squire.

Experience (Wilson) Williams passed away on March 13, 1761, in Connecticut [2] [3], aged 64[4].

She is buried in Pink Cemetery, Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut.[4] The gravestone picture offered on her Find A Grave memorial page shows the inscription, "in ye 65th Year of her Age"; gravestone ages are often inaccurate, but this gives a close match to the Newton birth record of 1696.

Disputed Origins

Find A Grave shows Experience Wilson's date of birth as 29 May 1698, and her birthplace as New London County, Connecticut; but it shows her husband as William Williams (1690-1767). No primary record is found online to support the 1698 birth, in New London or elsewhere in Connecticut. The Newton, Massachusetts, birth record indexed on FamilySearch for Experience, daughter of Joseph and Deliverance Wilson, gives a birthdate of November 10, 1696, at Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts[5]; this index listing links to a handwritten transcript of the original record, and the date matches the printed town transcript offered in the NEHGS database.[6] Experience's spouse William Williams was born at Newton; he and Experience did not remove to Connecticut until the mid-1730s. The Newton birth location and date have therefore been entered in the data field above.

[The Find a Grave memorial does not mention parents and is unsourced.[4] A message has been sent to the manager of the Find A Grave page requesting the source of the birth date and location.]

Disputed Marriage

This profile previously showed an undated, unsourced first marriage of Experience Wilson to Thomas Hillery Williams. No primary record is found online for such a union, and it would have been a geographic anomaly of the first order for those times: Thomas lived in Maryland, and Experience in Massachusetts. The two profiles have therefore been detached from each other.

Disambiguation

The Experience Wilson of this profile, the daughter of Joseph and Deliverance (Jackson) Wilson born at Newton in 1696, should not be confused with either of the two other Experience Wilsons born at Newton not long after. The two later Experiences were both daughters of a different couple, Samuel and Experience Wilson; the first daughter, evidently sadly short-lived, was born in late Septemberr of 1697[7]: while there is evidently no record of her death, it is apparent that she died in infancy or early childhood: the same parents gave the name Experience to their last recorded child in early August of 1705[8]. In a further loss, the mother's death was recorded only some two months after this second daughter's birth[9]. The daughter, however, apparently lived to adulthood, marrying Isaac Clark at Newton in the summer of 1729[10].
