Biography

Harry was born in 1868 in Wales. He was the son of John Williams and Janet Morgan.

Harry immigrated to the United States around 1878, according to the 1910 census.[1]

Harry married Gwendoline Williams, daughter of Thomas Reece Williams and Sarah Price. They married on 24 Dec 1889. By 1900, the couple and their children were living in Carbon County, Utah.[2] The household included:

  • Harry Williams Head M 32 Wales
  • Gwendeline Williams Wife F 27 Wales
  • Annie C. Williams Daughter F 9 Utah
  • Jeanette Williams Daughter F 5 Utah
  • Myrtle Williams Daughter F 2 Utah
  • Jeanette Williams Mother-in-law F 61 South Wales (most likely his mother, not mother-in-law since his wife's mother was named Sarah)
  • John Williams Brother-in-law M 20 Utah
  • Loreuys Williams Brother-in-law M 18 Utah

By 1910, the family was living in Cleveland, Emery, Utah, where Harry was farming in the summer and working for the coal mines in the winter.[1] The household included:

  • Harry M Williams Head M 41 Wales
  • Gwendoline Williams Wife F 39 Wales
  • Janet Williams Daughter F 14 Utah
  • Myrtle Williams Daughter F 12 Utah
  • Mary E Williams Daughter F 9 Utah
  • Gwendoline Williams Daughter F 6 Utah
  • Gladys Vilate Williams Daughter F 1 Utah

According to family history, Harry was literate and a scholar, as well as a singer with a deep bass voice. He enjoyed reading to others and acting out the characters. He also played the harmonica and Jews harp. Harry staged plays in the Cleveland Ward, and sang in the Cleveland Ward Choir as well as Emery Stake Choir, and at many funerals.[3]

The family was still living in Cleveland, Emery, Utah in 1920.[4] Two more children had been born since the previous census:

  • Harry M Williams Head M 51 Wales
  • Gwen Williams Wife F 46 Wales
  • Gwendoline Williams Daughter F 16 Utah
  • Gladys V Williams Daughter F 11 Utah
  • Harvey W Williams Son M 7 Utah
  • Frances I Williams Daughter F 4 Utah

By 1930, the the couple had only 2 children still at home, Harvey and Frances, and a granddaughter, Elverdis Williams.[5]

Harry had numerous mining accidents including one in which his heart stopped and others in which his face was cut wide open. His great faith pulled him through each incident. Harry held numerous offices within the Church of Latter Day Saints, including "ordained teacher, Elder, Seventy and High Priest." He was a very modest man who believed in the thirteenth Article of Faith which stated: "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and doing good to all men."[3]

By 1940, only Harvey remained with his parents, but a new daughter-in-law, Elmurtis Eden, had joined the household.[6]

After his wife died in 1941, Harry was bereft and lonely. He wasn't content anywhere, and walked many miles.[3]

Harry passed away in 1945 in Utah from yellow jaundice. His parents were named on his death certificate as John R. Williams and Jeanette Morgan.[7] Burial was in the Cleveland Cemetery, Cleveland, Emery County, Utah.[8]
