Biography

Harve was born in September 1867, as given on the 1900 Census and his death certificate information. He was the son of Jeff Williams and Jane Starnes. Harve and Minnie were married about 1893, as deduced from the 1900 and 1910 Census Reports. He passed away in 1944. He and his wife, Minnie, are buried in the Owens Chapel Cemetery near Melber, Graves County, Kentucky.

  • My grandmother, Fronie May Adams Miles, gave me the names of her mother's brothers and sisters. The brothers were Uncle Harvey, Uncle Henry, and Uncle Jeff. She also had a picture of Uncle Harvey and his wife, Aunt Minnie, and said "they lived somewhere in Graves County." MMH
  • 1870 U.S. Census for Graves County, Kentucky, Panther Precinct, Post Office -Clear Spring, enumerated 17 August, pg. no. 6, line 16. Harvy is a 5 year old white male, and the son of Thomas Williams, H/H 40/40. Thomas is a farmer. Harvy was born in Kentucky. Others in the household are his mother, Janie; four older sisters: Manda, 18; Nancy, 16; Arabella, 14; and Mary, 12; an older brother, Jesse,9; a younger brother, Henry, 7; and one younger sister, Erie Ann, 3 months ( actually Ida Lillie, age 5 months). Only Henry, Harvy, and Eire Ann (Ida Lillie) were born in Kentucky. All other family members were born in Tennessee. All relationships for this census are assumed, as only names are listed with no relationship given. (Panther Precinct is in the north central part of Graves County with the eastern edge adjoining Marshall County.)
  • 1880 U.S. Census for Graves County, Kentucky, Houseman's District #5, enumerated 21st June, Pg. No. 24, line 37. Harvy S. is a 13 year old white male, the son of Thomas J. Williams, H/H 210/226. His father is a farmer, and Harvy S. is a farm laborer. He was born in Kentucky; both parents in Tennessee. Other members of the household are his mother, L. Jane; his two older brothers, J. Davis and Henry H. who are 18 and 15, respectively; and two younger sisters, Ida L. and Hester J. They are 10 and 6. (Houseman's District, or Precinct, is located in the north central part of Graves County with the northern boundary adjoining McCracken County.)

Is a farmer who will be 26 years old his next birthday, is white, and was born in Graves County, Kentucky. His parents are T.J. Williams and S.J. Starnes (indexed as S J Slonus ). This is his first marriage. The bride, M.M. Gent, will be 19 on her next birthday. She was born in Graves County, Kentucky. Her parents are B.F. Gent and M.M. Carico. This is her first marriage. They were married at Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois, on March 29, 1893. Witnesses were Rella Downey and H.S. Heslin. They were married by D.A. Clenderson, Justice of the P.

Harve Williams, a 32 year old white male, is head of the household. He was born September 1867 in Kentucky. Both his parents were born in Tennessee. He has been married 7 years to M. Minnie Williams. Minnie has given birth to 3 children, with all three living. Harve is a farmer and was working all of the previous year. The farm is rented. He can read and write, and speaks English. His children are: E. Elura, a daughter aged 6; G. Bennie, a son aged 4; and W. Sherman, a one year old son. Minnie and all three children were born in Kentucky. (The enumerator gives the family surname, then the middle initial, then the first name for all family members.)
  • 1910 U.S. Census for Graves County, Kentucky, Magisterial District 7 (Part of), enumerated 4th May, Sheet Number 12A, line 39, H/H 144/144. H. Sherman Williams is a 43 year old white male and head of the household. He has been married one time, and that for 17 years. He was born in Kentucky; his father in Tennessee; his mother in the United States. He is a farmer doing general farm work and is an employer. He speaks English and can read and write. He owns his farm free of mortgage. His wife is Minnie, a white female of 35 years, married once for 17 years. She has had 4 children, with all 4 living. She and both her parents were born in Kentucky. The Williams' oldest daughter is Eura, 16; their sons are Guy, 14, and Wayne, 11. Both sons are employed on the home farm as farm laborers. The younger daughter is Nauva, age 4. All the children except Nauva have attended school since Sept. 1, 1909. ( Harve's brother Henry and his wife Laura were also enumerated in Graves County Magisterial District 7, but were in another enumeration district with another enumerator, so don't know how close to each other they might have lived.)
  • 1920 U.S. Census for Graves County, Kentucky, Magisterial District 7 (part of) Precinct 1, Lowe's, enumerated 5th January, pg. 2A, Owens Chapel Road. Line 14, H/H 27/27- Harve Williams is a 52 year old married white male, and is head of the household. His farm is owned, but with a mortgage. He was born in Kentucky, speaks English, and can read and write. He works on the farm doing general farm work for his own account. Both his parents were born in Tennessee. Minnie M. Is his wife. She was born in Kentucky, her father in Tennessee, and her mother in Kentucky. Their daughter Nauva is 14 and has attended school since Sept. 1, 1919. Coy is their 9 year old son, and he has also attended school since Sept. 1, 1919. Their son Wayne is 21 years old and is married. He is listed with "none" under "occupation or work," but he is listed as number 37 on the farm schedule, which is separate from that of his father, who is number 36. Nana N., Wayne's wife, is enumerated as Harve's daughter-in-law. She is 14 years old. Nauva, Coy, and Wayne were all born in Kentucky, but all, including Nana, are marked just the same as Minnie's line as having their father born in Tennessee and mother in Kentucky. Edd Trasion is a lodger, is 23 years old, and is employed in labor on the farm. He and both his parents were born in Kentucky. On this same page, line 1, H/H 24/24 is Guy Williams, a 24 year old married white male who is head of the household. He is a farmer doing general farm work for his own account and is listed as number 33 on the farm schedule. (Guy is Harve and Minnie's oldest son.). Guy's wife is Floy, who is 21 years old. ( Owens Chapel Road is in far northwest Graves County leading northwest from Lowe's to the County Line Road on the McCracken line with Graves. It is very near the county line with Carlisle County, which is the northwest boundary of Graves.)
  • 1930 U.S. Census for McCracken county, Kentucky, Paducah city (part), enumerated April 17, Sheet No. 18A, page 23, Broad Street, house number 2057. H/H 369/400 is William G. Hayden, head, and owner of the property, valued at $5000, which is a farm, but he is employed as a tobacco warehouse manager. Living in the household is his wife, two daughters, his mother, and two boarders. Family 401 at the same house number of 2057 is that of Harve S. Williams, who pays rent of $11.25 per month. The property is a farm. Harve is a 62 year old married white male. He was married at age 25. He and both his parents were born in Tennessee. ( all other census records indicate birth in Kentucky.). He can read and write, and is a farmer engaged in truck farming, and was at work the previous working day. He is not a veteran. His wife is Minnie, who is 54 years old, and was married at age 18. William C. is their son. He is 19 years old and listed as married,but no wife is given. He was married at age 19.. His occupation is given as "none,". but answers "yes" to question of whether at work the previous working day. Guy is Harve and Minnie's son, and is 34 years old and employed as the manager of a loan company. He was married at age 21. He is a WW veteran. Dwight L. , 10 years old, is listed as Harve's grandson. Norman, 7 years old, is also listed as a grandson. Wayne is 31 years old and is the married son of Harve and Minnie. He was married at age 21. He is employed as an insurance salesman. Nana is Harve's daughter-in-law. She is 24 years old and was married at age 14. Howard is Harve's 3 year old grandson.
  • Minnie M. Williams died in 1933, as given on her gravestone.
  • Harvey Sherman Williams died 15 February 1944 in Ferndale, Oakland County, Michigan, as given on a record of "Michigan Death Certificates, 1921 - 1952", a database which is found on FamilySearch. (no image available) He was a male born 17 Sept. 1867, in Graves County, Kentucky, to parents Thomas Jefferson Williams and Jane Storns. He was widowed. (Sons Coy and Guy are living together in Ferndale on the 1940 U.S. census.).
  • Harve and his wife Minnie are buried in the Owens Chapel Cemetery near Melber, Graves County, Kentucky. Dates on the marker for Harve read "1868 - 1944", which makes his birth year disagree with other information indicating his birth year as 1867. Find A Grave: Memorial #139164174
