Biography
Artie (Williams) Nuby is a part of US Black heritage.
Artie Maria Williams was born on 20 Apr 1875 in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio, United States. She was the daughter of Allen Williams and Ellen Bell.[1][2] She grew up in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[3][4] Artie was a public school teacher. In 1910, she was working as a teacher and living in Gallipolis.[5]
Artie married Joel Nuby on 26 Jun 1913.[2] There is no evidence that they ever had children. In 1920, they were living in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio and Joel was working as a school house janitor.[6] Artie's husband Joel died on 22 Feb 1920 of influenza and pneumonia.[7]
After her husband's death, Artie moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, where she lived for the rest of her life, working as a teacher.[8] She was active at the Quinn Chapel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church, eventually serving as the superintendent of the Sunday School.[9] She was also a leader in the Anna Hayes temple of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, a fraternal organization.[10] She was frequently a speaker at church and civic gatherings.[11] In 1928, Artie earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Ohio University.[12]
Artie died at the age of 58 on 20 Jan 1935 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio.[13][14] She was buried in the Pine Street Colored Cemetery in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[15]
Research Note
Birthplace: Artie's marriage record lists her birthplace as Gallipolis, Ohio.[2] Her birth record[1] seems to indicate that her birthplace is Guyan City, Gallia County, Ohio - a place that doesn't exist. The town/township/city box just has ditto marks, and going up, you see the right hand one is under the word "city" and the left hand one is under "Guyan" of "Guyan Township". It seems that the left hand ditto mark was intended to reference Gallipolis, which appears on the line above "Guyan".
