Biography
Oscar Williams is a part of US Black heritage.
Oscar R Williams was born in Feb 1870 in Ohio, United States of America, probably in Gallia County where his family lived at the time.[1] He was the son of Allen Williams and Ellen Bell.[2] In 1880, his family was living in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[3]
Oscar married Mamie A. Casey on 3 Jul 1895.[4] They had four children.
Oscar was a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church. He therefore moved frequently as his assigned churches changed, usually every few years. Known locations he lived and/or worked include:
~1903-1905: pastor of the AME church in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio[6]
1910: lived in Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio[7]
Oct 1913-Sep 1916: pastor of the AME church in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio[6]
~1918-1924: pastor at Payne M.E. Church in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio[8][9]
~1924-1927: pastor at Quinn Chapel M.E. Church in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio[8]
Oscar was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Odd Fellows, and a member of the Knights of Pythias.[10]
Oscar was shot and killed on 31 Aug 1927 in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio,[2] by John Sinkford. Sinkford alleged that he had seen Oscar being intimate with Sinkford's wife and then shot Oscar as he was starting his car while leaving Sinkford's home.[8][6] Oscar's church investigated the allegations. They said that Sinkford's wife denied the allegations and that Oscar had been inside the house for 15 minutes or less and that he was there to collect money for a church conference.[11] However, during Sinkford's trial, his wife said that Oscar had called on her at their home several times a week for a year, and Sinkford was therefore exonerated.[12]
Oscar was buried in Pine Street Cemetery in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[13]
