Biography

Matteo Vutera (sometimes recorded as Gutera) is a farmer (agricola) born around 1820-25 in Corleone, based on his ages at the births of his sons, Bernardo and Vincenzo. His birth year is around 1814, based on his reported age at death. He is the son of Giuseppe Vutera and Maria Fratello.

Matteo is a farmer (agricola). He marries Biagia Ligotino on 12 January 1846. His father has died by this time and his mother, Maria, is still living.[1]

Matteo and Biagia have at least eight children together: Giuseppe (1847), Maria (1849), Bernardo (1851), twins Leoluca and Giovanni (1854), Vincenzo (1857), Salvatore (1862), and Matteo (1866).

Giuseppe (1847), Maria (1849), the twins (1854), and Salvatore (1862) are all known from their baptismal records. Bernardo and Vincenzo survive to marry; their marriage publications include their civil birth records, from which we know Matteo and Biagia's ages, Matteo's occupation, and the family's address. Giuseppe, Giovanni, and Salvatore also survive to marry.

Giuseppe is born and baptized 14 March 1847, named after his paternal grandfather, as is traditional for the first born son. His godparents are Biagio Colletti and Giuseppa Bonanno, wife of Vincenzo Colletti.

Maria dies on 26 November 1849 at two months of age.

Bernardo is born 19 January 1851 in his parents' home in via S. Giovan Battista, Corleone. Matteo, age 30 (b. 1820) reports his birth. Biagia is 24. Bernardo is baptized the same day. His godparents are his maternal uncle and aunt, Giuseppe and Castrenza Ligotino, brother and sister. (His mother also has cousins named Giuseppe and Castrenza Ligotino who are also siblings.)

Vincenzo is born 23 July 1857 in his parents' home in via S. Elena, Corleone. Matteo has aged only two years in seven and reports his age as 32 (b. 1825), while Biagia is four years older, at 28.

Biagia dies, reportedly at age 42 (b. 1830, though more reliable figure from birth of Bernardo makes her 46 at death) on 28 November 1872. Her husband has predeceased her. Matteo's date of death is not yet known.

Giuseppe marries Giuseppa Cutrera on 15 November 1874.

Matteo, the son, is born 26 June 1866 and baptized Mattheum the next day. His godparents are Paschalis Mistritta and Maria, his unmarried sister.

Death of Matteo

Matteo, the father, dies at age 53 (b. 1814) on 3 January 1868. Biagia survives him.[2]

Biagia dies, reportedly at age 42 (she is 43) on 28 November 1872.

Leoluca marries twice: first to Carmela Cilebba, daughter of the late Leoluca and Lucia Salemi, on 23 October 1881. By this time, his parents have both passed away.

Vincenzo marries Vincenza Vintaloro in church on 15 October 1882, and in the civil office on 22 June 1883. It is the first marriage for either of them.

Giovanni marries Bernarda Ciavorollo on 16 September 1883.

Bernardo marries Giuseppa Mannina in 1886.

Leoluca's first wife, Carmela, dies at age 30 on 16 January 1890. He remarries the same year to Maria Gulotta, on 26 April 1890 in Corleone.

Salvatore marries Vincenza Puccio on 29 November 1894.
