Biography

William Riley Vaughan was born on 23 Sept 1830 near Washington, Franklin County, Missouri, the son of William Vaughan and Arabella Williams. His twin sister died at birth. The family came to Gasconade County, MO in 1839 and stayed.

William married first, Catherine Leach in 1855[1] and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church. He homesteaded a farm east of Owensville, in 1857. They had one son and four daughters:

  2. Melissa Jane, b. 1859 d. 1866
  3. Annis Cordelia, b. 1861 d. 1864
  4. Harriett Eliza Ann (Vaughan) Davis (1862–1953) m. Andrew Davis
  5. William Benjamin, b. 1864 d. 1913 m. Fannie C. Woodruff

William enlisted in the Union Army in 1861. He served as a Lieutenant[2] and as a Captain.[3] He was a friend of Governor Fletcher of Missouri and of General William T. Sherman.

William married second to Samantha Winifred Matthews in 1868 in Gasconade County, Missouri,[4] and was a member of Primitive Baptist Church near Woolam, MO. William was an active Primitive Baptist minister from 1869 to 1913. He and Samantha had two sons and one daughter:

  1. Catherine Elizabeth (Vaughan) McGrath (1869–1931) m. Frank McGrath
  2. James Alpheus b. 1871 d. 1872
  3. Fremont Gilpin b. 1873 d. 1874

William's obituary in 1922 said that "The daughter, Mrs. F.J. McGrath, of Mountain View, Missouri, survives."[5]

He married third to Anna Elizabeth Pruitt in 1879 in Gasconade County, Missouri.[6] They had one son and two daughters:

  1. Clara S. - b.1884 d. 1966 m. Henry D. Anderson of Vandalia
  2. Rosalind Eudora (Vaughan) Smith (1887–1971) m. Edward Smith of Owensville
  3. Charles Emmett Vaughan (1889–1964) of Owensville

Anna died in 1915.

His son, Charles Emmett, shared that:

"In 1855 my father homesteaded land joining Rev. Leach's farm on the South. Joining the Rev. Leach's farm on the East was the home and farm of John and Catherine (Hoffman) Holt. My father sold his farm in 1918 having lived on that one farm for sixty-three years and reared his three families there."[7]

William died in 1922 at age 92 at the home of his son Charles Emmett in Gasconade County, Missouri,[8] and is buried at the Leach Cemetery in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri.[9]

The Vaughan Organization biography provides details on his ministry, his military service and his family members. Of note is his connection to the Lewis (of Lewis & Clark) family.[10] (However, the link no longer works.)
