Biography

John Holt was born in 1782 in Orange County, North Carolina. He was the son of George Holt Jr. and Eva Poole.

He married Catherina Hoffman on 27 Sept 1805 in North Carolina. They had nine children:

  1. Elizabeth Holt, (1806–1897)
  2. Eliza Holt, (1808–Deceased)
  3. Jacob Holt, (1811–1895)
  4. Lucy Holt, (1813–1853)
  5. Henry Holt, (1815–1885)
  6. George Hoffman Holt, (1818–1884)
  7. Mary Ann Holt, (1820–1882)
  8. Catherine Holt, (1823–Deceased)
  9. Rhoda Jane Holt, (1825–1902)

John Holt appears as a witness on a marriage bond[1] for his brother in law, Jacob Huffman and Mary "Polly" Whitsell in North Carolina on 7 Apr 1812.

He and many of his children migrated to St. Clair County, Illinois, before 1825.

The 1830 Census[2] shows him in the 40-50 age bracket in St. Clair County, Illinois.

By 1840, the Census[3] shows him in the 50-60 age bracket living with his family in Gasconade County, Missouri.

He passed away in 1844. [4]

Research Notes

Only seven of the above listed children appear in records of the settlement of his estate. Eliza and Catherine are missing, and thus probably deceased by that time.
