Agnes Ann Langhorn, daughter of single mother Jane Langhorn, was born on 25 May 1841 and baptised on 20 June 1841 at their local parish church in Kendal, Westmorland, England.[1][2]

In the 1841 census Agnes (age 1) was living with her mother Jane (age 20) in the Kendal Workhouse in Kendal, Westmorland, England.[3]

By the time of the 1851 census Agnes (age 9) was already in servitude, employed by Agnes Tate, publican, in Kendal, Westmorland, England. She worked as a general servant. Also in the home was Garnet Wilson, a widowed brewer.[4]

Agnes married Richard Smith (born about 1831 in England, son of the late William Smith, Overlooker) on September 22, 1861 in St John's Church in Preston, Lancashire, England.[6] Shortly after their wedding they emigrated, settling in New Zealand, where they had at least 8 children.
