Biography

Mary's actual surname at birth is unknown by some reports; however, when she married Edmund Bellson her name is recorded as Mary Crew daughter of Elizabeth Tooke. A lack of her father being named could indicate that he had passed away but his records suggest otherwise and historian John Boddie gives her as the daughter of Thomas Tooke.^[1] Please note that the original marriage document for her second marriage gives her name as Crew and not Crow as is sometimes seen.

"Edmond Bellson the son of Elizabeth Belson of Nanzemun And Mary Crew the daughter of Mary Tooke of the Isleaweight county propounded their marriage before a meeting of frends men & women in the house of William Clarkes in Pagon Creek on the 13th day of 9 moth Last and coming before the meeting the second time at Richard Ratliff's howse one the eleventh day of this Instant month they did publish their marriage again and were married in the house of his mother on the 13th day of the 10th month 1684." Mary died 18 Feb 1687^[5] leaving two known children by Edmund:

Mary, born 24 Jan 1686.^[6] In his daughter's birth record his name is also seen as Ormond rather than Edmund.
