DEATH OF MR. E. H. TOMPSON. We regret to record the death of Mr. Edwin Henry Tompson, which took place early yesterday morning at his residence, Tarcutta street, Wagga. Old residents of the district will have kindly memory for one whose gentleness of disposition, and strict probity, endeared him to all with whom he came into contact. He may be regarded as one of the oldest identities of the Wagga district, he having come here in the thirties, and spent his life from boyhood upwards, amongst its people. Of late years Mr. Tompson suffered sad bereavement in the loss of his wife, and shortly afterwards his son Mr. Edwin Bissell Tompson, who formerly practised as a solicitor in Wagga. His health during the past four or five years had been weak, and latterly he was unable to move from his residence. Mr. Tompson's kindness of temperament became widely known, so much so, that in his travels in the bushranging days, he was considered by the desperadoes of the road as one who should be allowed to go unmolested, in fact one notorious ' knight of the road,' Morgan, is stated to have expressed himself to that effect. We hear from the best authority that in his very early days the deceased gentleman commenced his career in sheep farming with the late George Mair, they being boys together at the time at the Douro Estate near Yass, the property of the late Mr. O'Brien. He was one of the first white men, in company with the late F. A. Tompson, to cross the Kimo range with a bullock team. This was in 1832 when they, for Mr. Charles Tompson, father of deceased, of Clydesville, South Creek near Windsor, took up Kimo station, and later on followed the river down to Wagga and took up 'Oura', and 'Eunonyhareenyha', and later on 'Bundidgerie' near Narandera. These stations they stocked and kept in possession for years, meanwhile having great trouble with the aboriginals, which infested these parts at the time. He took office as clerk of petty sessions and land agent for this and the Urana district, at Wagga about 1886, which positions he filled until the land agent was appointed to perform the special duties. For years after he performed the duties of C.P.S., and retired on a pension about seven years since. Mr. Tompson leaves two daughters and three sons, one of the latter being an assistant of the Wilcannia Branch of the A.J.S. bank. The funeral will leave the residence of the deceased at 3 o'clock this afternoon, at which the Rev. A. Duncan, M.A., will officiate. [7]
