Nathaniel's origins are not definitively known. He is often confused with Nathaniel Thayer, son of Richard of Braintree. As discussed in "Nathaniel Thayer Family" in The Snow-Estes ancestry':'[1]
That he was not the son of Richard and Dorothy (Mortimore) Thayer, of Braintree, has been clearly proven. His identity is unknown. He was one of the fifty-two grantees named in the deed from Gov. Prince and others for the 'North Purchase' of Taunton, June 6, 1668; also named one of the grantees of the Bradford deed of 1689."
According to the Thayer Families Association, he is the same Nathaniel christened in Thornbury, Gloucester, England on 10 May 1640. This would make him the son of William Thayer and Mary Kellayway, and the nephew of Richard Thayer of Braintree. He probably came from England and settled in Taunton around 1660. Initial DNA Testing suggests there is a genetic connection between the Thayers of Taunton and Thayers of Braintree.[2]
Nathaniel likely died in Taunton. No death record or probate record has been located. Nathaniel is mentioned in an agreement dated 19 November 1691 regarding the probate of his father-in-law.[14] Nathaniel also signed a deed giving land to his son Nathaniel 4 April 1716.[5]
There are many dates associated with Nathaniel's death without supporting evidence. Many of them seem to be conflations with other Nathaniel Thayers.
1693 Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts - There is no death record in Taunton VR and 1693 is the date of death for Nathaniel Thayer of Braintree
"Nathaniel" died in Braintree, Massachusetts, on 28 March 1728[15] refers to Nathaniel Thayer, son of Richard Thayer and Hannah Pray.
1707 in Taunton (No death record found in Taunton VRs)
After Nov 1707 (no explanation)

Find A Grave: Memorial #65470799 Note: The FindAGrave memorial is unsourced, and as of 7.20.20 includes the erroneous death date noted in the Death section, and also presumes that Nathaniel Thayer of Taunton is the same as Nathaniel Tayer of Thornbury (which is possible but not proven). DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships.
It is likely that these
autosomal DNA
test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:
The Thayers of Braintree and surrounding area run through my Stetson cousins, including a couple of Nathaniel Thayers , but as far as I know, they don't connect through any of my DNA studies so I probably can't help you there.
For my research, I will use FaG as a guide to look for relations, but will only post it if I can find corroborating sources to confirm the information., altho some people have put obits and other information with sources on FaG Memorials and that info is usually very accurate.

All the records I have read say William Tayer and Mary Kellaway are Nathaniel Thayer’s parents. I am unable to record this information.
The date on findagrave is incorrect. If you read the bio here under death it says: “ "Nathaniel" died in Braintree, Massachusetts, on 28 March 1728[15] refers to Nathaniel Thayer, son of Richard Thayer and Hannah Pray.”
The birth date on FindAGRave is discussed in the Uncertain origins section in the bio.

M. Thank you! I surely do not want to take the children out who are not absolutely certain. I hope, one day, we can find some certain sources for them, though!
Ellen, Thank you! I found the source you cited. Very interesting!
As noted earlier in the comments, the children need better sourcing. I've gone through and added links directly to the sources given in Torrey's NE Marriages. Joanna's birth is in the proprietor's records, and Nathaniel & Jonathan proven in deeds. The others Ravenscroft lists as "probable."
Ruth Ravenscroft's genealogy for Nathaniel Thayer is now available electronically. The link previously displayed on this page no longer works, but I replaced it today with a link that does work.
I note that she says of him that he is "probably he who was baptized 10 May 1640 in Thornbury, England." She says that he first appears in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1660, probably as a recent immigrant, and presumed to be age 20.
No, I don't know the sources for this family. It took some time and effort to find the sources for Abigail, who turns out to be documented better than most of the others. Finding sources for this family will be a slow slog...
The Snow-Estes Genealogy that's cited in this profile is a reasonably reliable source that explains where its information came from.
The Briggs genealogy article that I cited in Abigail's profile is a pretty solid source for the members of this family who married people named Briggs.
Ruth Ravenscroft's genealogy (also cited in this profile) for the family of Nathaniel Thayer is mentioned favorably in that Briggs genealogy, so it's likely to be a solid work. Unfortunately, I get an error message when I try to access the link this evening, so I've not looked at it.
Thank you, Ellen. Do you know what the reliable sources are for the other children who are listed in this profile? Nine children are listed, but only two are vouched for, as far as I can tell.
With other families, I've learned that most early Taunton vital records were lost, but many details have been assembled from various other sources such as deeds, wills, and family bibles. The Snow-Estes genealogy that's cited here appears to discuss some of the logic that's been used to assemble families.
I edited the biography for daughter Abigail to include some sourced information about her -- mostly as an illustration of what might exist, and where it might be found. One of those sources confidently identified her parents. One source for the identification is a document (probably a deed) in which Nathaniel Thayer identified Thomas Briggs as his son-in-law and also referred to Thomas' wife Abigail.
Can anyone tell me how we know who Nathaniel's children were and the validity of the sources for this, since we do not even know who his parents were? I have seen evidence for their son, Nathaniel, who married Briggs, but not any of the other children listed in this profile.
Nancy and Elizabeth, if you have evidence that you believe will confirm that this man's parents were William Thayer and wife Mary, please start a G2G discussion and present your sources and your reasoning.
This profile has too much history of parents being added and removed, merges being proposed and rejected, etc. G2G is a better venue than profile messages for working these things out....
