Clara was born in 1882, the daughter of Joseph Steurenthaler and Maria Wunderle from Zipfelhof.[1]
She remained single and lived in Zipfelmühle with her other unmarried siblings.
Luise (Steurenthaler) Mechau saw the reason for Clara not being married in her coarse speech. Apparently when she was at the dance events in Bärental, the men left her standing alone as soon as she starting talking.[2]
On the other hand Clara must have been quite good-looking if she was the woman portrayed in traditional Black Forest garb on postcard.[3] The back of one surviving card shows that it was addressed to her nephew Edwin Wehrle while he was in the field during World War II.
With these two stories in mind, one could also imagine, that Clara might have been the "Frl. Steurenthaler aus Hinterzarten", who won the women's race during the skiing contest on Feldberg in February 1901. Said "Fräulein" was ahead of Alice de Beauclair and Alice Brassert, both from Freiburg.[4]
Assuming the "Fräulein" was at least 15 years old at the event and not older than 40 years, a search with WikiTree+ yields eight profiles, out of which two or three remain.
Assuming that Maria would have been too busy with her baby and Luise would have been a little too young with 15 years, so Clara remains the most likely one.
Clara's death date was not noted on her baptism record, so the authors of the unpublished Hinterzarten family book probably got it from a side note on her civil birth record (they only evaluated records up to 1900).[5]
