Biography

This profile is part of the Steurenthaler Name Study.

Frieda was born on 9 December 1887 at Zipfelhof as sixth child and third daughter of Josef Steurenthaler and Maria Wunderle. As opposed to her next older sibling Ludwig, she got baptized in Altglashütten. Her godparents were Andreas Andris, from neighboring Raimartiehof and Karolina Wunderle, a sister of his mother.[1]

In autumn 1933, when her father's heritage was split,[2] she was already married to Leo Brugger from Hierehof in Saig, who was ten years older than her and (had?) inherited Hierahäusle.

Paul Steurenthaler (1938–2018), the son of her brother Ludwig, was her godchild. Since she was a sewer, she sewed him a jacket and a pair of trousers - both olive green - when he was able to walk.

Apparently she was very frustrated with her life, because she had a lot of work to do with the household and their four cows. Her husband is rumored not to have helped her that much. At one point she learned that she had breast cancer. In winter 1950 she commited suicide by strangulating herself with a scarve in a thicket of the forest between her home and Hochfirst. Her body apparently wasn't found for four weeks.

Hierahäusle went back to Hierahof after this and later was inhabited by a nephew of Leo and his family.

Research notes

Frieda took care of a boy named Baeuerle/Bäuerle, when she still was healthy. He reportedly came visiting her regularly and was clinging on her. She sewed clothing for him and apparently co-raised him. It is reported that she apparently had the impression that his parents, who had "a lot" of children, were not that much into cleanliness. Apparently they also did not have a toilet.

Luise (Steurenthaler) Mechau claimed he was born in 1926 and he died in World War II. His first name might have been Willi or Wilhelm.

The soldier memorial in Saig contains four Bäuerle as soldiers, who died in World War II:[3]

  • Ernst
  • Eugen
  • Josef
  • Leonhard (missing)

Luise's sister Maria (Steurenthaler) Zähringer had a death announcement in her collection, that informs about the death of a Willi Bäuerle, born in Saig in 1926, and passed away in 2001. This has to be him. His profile also contains links to potential siblings.
