Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker) who attneded Horsham Monthly Meeting in Horsham, Pennsylvania

Samuel Spencer and Elizabeth Whitton were the parents of William Spencer, born the Eleventh month, (January, O.S. - see notes) the first day of 1701, Upper Dublin Township, in what is modern day Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. William's mother died in August 1702, and William was probably reared by Richard Whitton, his uncle.[1]

William married Third Month (May, O.S.) 24, 1733 to Elizabeth, a daughter of Ellis Lewis and Anne, his wife, of Upper Dublin. The ceremony was held at the Gwynedd meeting-house, according to the order of Friends. (The Society of Friends, commonly referred to as Quakers)[1]

Among their children were:[1]

  1. James Spencer (3rd month 16th day 1734)
  2. Thomas Spencer (9th month 1st day 1736), who married Mary Hallowell
  3. Ann Spencer (11th month 16th day 1737), who married James Hayhurst
  4. Sarah Spencer (1st month 6th day 1739)
  5. Samuel Spencer (8th month 14th day 1742)
  6. Enoch Spencer (12th month 8th day 1744)
  7. Job Spencer (1st month 8th day 1750), who married Hannah Kenderdine
  8. Abel Spencer (8th month 8th day 1753), who married Rebecca Hayhurst

William died in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, the Third month 20 (or 28) 1756 and was buried in the Friends' ground at Horsham. The membership of the family continued at Horsham. Elizabeth (Lewis) Spencer obtained a certificate from the Abington Monthly Meeting for herself and four of her children: Sarah, Samuel, Enoch, and Abel, to attend the Middletown Monthly Meeting, in Bucks county. She died Fourth month, 11, 1789, "aged 84 years and one month."[1]

Research Notes

  • Old Style Calendar: Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year. Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are used to indicate whether the year has been adjusted. Often both dates are used.
  • The above biography needs rewritten by abstraction from the Jenkins text. Large portions are verbatim from Jenkins.

He passed away in 1756.
