The Smoking Snakes Team
This Team participates in the Challenges and Thons held throughout the year on WikiTree, and focuses on Brazilian profiles. Everyone is welcome to participate!
Brazil is a sub-project under the umbrella of the Latin-American Heritage Project, and communicates in the Latin America Discord chat.
Why the Smoking Snakes?
The Cobras Fumantes, or Smoking Snakes, was the nickname of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), active during World War II. Brazil was not, and is not to this day, known for its global military influence, and it was joked that "it would be easier for a snake to smoke a pipe than for Brazil to participate in the European war."
In 1942, after the United States joined the Allies and established bases in Fernando de Noronha, FEB joined the war effort, creating their motto "The snake is smoking."

Goals and Strategies
For Connect-a-Thons: You can participate by adding any profile to an already-existing profile, whether the profile is connected to the global tree or not. You can work on your own family tree, or building out the tree of a person of interest. To align your strategy with the Goals of the Brazil Team, check out the Brazilian Notables category to help build out the profiles.
Results
April 2023 Connect-a-Thon:
- Co-Captain: Morgana Patrocinio Costa added 413 profiles.
- Co-Captain: Adriana Hazelton added 221 profiles.
As a result of this work,
- 24 Brazilian Notables and 1 American Notable were connected to the global tree.
