In Memoriam: Quentin Smith was an active and generous member of WikiTree. Their presence in our community will be missed. However, their many contributions will live on as part of our shared family tree. This is a gift they gave to family members, distant cousins, and future generations, and is now a permanent part of their legacy.

Biography

Quentin was born in 1928. He is the son of Paul Smith and Marian Patterson.

His yDNA Haplogroup: R-7253, mtDNA Haplogroup: N1a1a3, Descendant Tree: R1b-L21.

FamilyTree yDNA for Gaylord Vard Smith (Smith-49749) proves Vard's paternal descent from Nicholas Smith (Smith-46606) via Nicholas's son William, his son Josiah, his son Isaac, his son Josiah, his son, John Thompson Smith, Sr., his son John, Jr. his son Vard, and his son John. Extensive family, Bible and public records prove connection of this line to the maternal line of Gaylord's 4th cousin, Quentin Smith [Smith-44054] via Henry, brother of John Thompson Smith, Sr., Gaylord's great grand grandfather.

Quentin is a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the 12th generation from the Elder William Brewster. He is also a member of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution in the 6th generation from David Smith and descends from other Revolutionary War patriots. He is a 4th cousin, once removed, of U. S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Born and reared in a U.S. Army family, Quentin attended schools where his father's career took the family, graduating in 1946 from East High School in Denver, CO. After nearly 4 years in the Army, he graduated in 1957 from the School of Architecture, University of Virginia, receiving the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects. He worked for private firms in Paris, France, and San Francisco, California, before a 20-year career in the federal government in architecture, architectural preservation and art projects in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. In retirement he lives in Wilton Manors, Florida.

DNA

Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Quentin Cabell Smith, FTDNA kit #28849, and his 7th cousin once removed Len Smith, FTDNA kit #216226, match at a Genetic Distance of 1 on 67 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Thomas Smith. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 94.73% and within the last 9 generations is 96.68%.

Descendant of yDNA group NE12 Thomas Smith (1634 - 1724) and Elizabeth Patterson. See SmithConnections Northeastern DNA Project.[1]

I still don't know the ancestors of Wilmouth Jarrett, my 4th great grandmother. She was the husband of John Cunningham Patton.

Mayflower Project Member.

I see your profile doesn’t include a mayflower G2G Tag. See “Followed Tags” above. You should have the tag - mayflower -so you can follow pertinent Mayflower activities on G2G. When you add the tag, please include the names of passengers in whom you are interested. Thank you

You were only connected to the Southern Colonies project profile because you were a manger on one of it's project profiles. Now that you are not, you should receive no more emails. Let me know if you need any additional help.

If you wish to remove yourself as manager but want to stay on the trusted list (for example on a public "green" privacy profile), look to the right of your photo in the list and click "remove as manager."

You will still get emails for that profile unless you remove yourself from the trusted list.

Let me know if you need help.

Let me explain how you can do this yourself. Click edit, go to the bottom of the edit page and you will see on the left side of the screen that it says privacy level and there will be a round lock icon (white for open). Click change level. This will open a new page. If it is flashing in a different tab at the top of your screen, click that so you can see the page. Scroll down until you are below the photos of the profile managers. Click "remove self"

This will remove you from both the trusted list and as manager.

Being new to Wikitree, I stumbled my way around, figuring out this and that. I am very thankful for the help and trust Quentin has given me during this time. I wanted to give him a badge, but he already has one, so I am going to publicly give him my thanks for all his guidance and help! Thanks Cousin!
