Mentor Smith is a part of US Black heritage.
Mentor (also spelled Mintor) was born about 1800 and was enslaved by Samuel Smith in Granville County, North Carolina, at the Abram's Plains plantation.
When Samuel's will was probated in December 1800, Mentor (together with his mother Phillis and four siblings) was inherited by Samuel's wife Mary (Webb) Smith.
When Mary's will was probated in February 1828, Mentor was given to her son Alexander Smith. In the estate inventory, Mentor was listed with a "supposed age" of 28 years old.
