Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Rachel Smith is a part of US Black heritage.

Rachel was born about 1794 and was enslaved by Samuel Smith in Granville County, North Carolina, at the Abram's Plains plantation.

When Samuel's will was probated in December 1800, Rachel (together with her mother Phillis and four siblings) was inherited by Samuel's wife Mary (Webb) Smith.

When Mary's will was probated in February 1828, Rachel was given to her son Maurice Smith. In the estate inventory, Rachel was listed with a "supposed age" of 34 years old.
