The family lived in Hinterzarten until 1849, when Andreas became innkeeper of Adler in Bärental (currently: part of Feldberg (Schwarzwald)).[2] With this relocation the family members including Maria were not longer residents of Hinterzarten.
After Andreas had gone bankrupt in 1856,[2] Maria's parents split up and had their possession separated the following year. The protocol of the separation mentions Caroline, being 8 years of age and living together with her sisters Maria (19), Theresia (18) and Adelheid (7) as well as their mother in rent.[3]
On 29 December 1875 a letter was sent from the foreigner office (?) (Police Etrangers) in the Swiss city of Neuchatel to the local council of Bärental containing Caroline's expired passport (Paßbuch, might have been also her document of residency [Heimatschein]). This document was needed for her to be able to continue staying in said city or canton.[4]
Research notes
The files about Heimatschein documents for Bärental between 1855 and 1920 do not contain any further document about her.[5]
In summer 1885 her sister Kunigunda Schindler also requested a Heimatschein in order to start working in Neuchatel.
An inquiry to the State Archives of the Canton of Neuchâtel lead to three hits about her:[6]:
5POL-2: residence permit number 17585. Origin Barenthal, Baden, born in 1847(?), single, she handed her papers in on 1 March 1875, and she left on 28 March 1881.
5POL-3: residence permit number 28830. Origin Baden, born in 1848, she handed her papers in on 29 January 1876 and withdrew them on 15 April 1876.
5POL-4: residence permit number 35087. Origin Baden, born in 1848, single, arrived on 10 August 1876 and left on 28 April 1877 and her residence is Neuchâtel.
