Biography

Joseph was born in 1841. He is the son of Andreas Schindler and Adelheid Schelb. [1]

When his father died in 1872 Joseph lived in Pittsburgh, America. The inheritance notes were taken to "Mr. Josef Schindler care of Mefs. Gray, Possiel et Rese No 29 5th Avenue Pittsbourgh, United States of Amerika". [2] Gray, Possiel et Rese in Pittsbourgh were Merchant Tailors and Dealers.[3]

In 1876 he was living and working as a tailor at 196 Liberty Street besides 209 Penn Avenue[4]

On 20 April 1889 Joseph, stated as not married before, married Millie Kieckbusch.[5]

During the 1900 census the couple was living together with Karl Kieckbusch, Milley's brother and her niece Milley Kieckbusch, who might have been his daughter.[6]

Name Relation Status Sex Age Birth Place
Joseph Schindler Head Married M 59 Germany
Milley Schindler Wife Married F 42 Germany
Milley Kieckbusch Niece Single F 15 Pennsylvania
Karl Kieckbusch Brother-in-law Single M 65 Germany

Ten years later, in the 1910 census, they are still living together. This time with a Herman Busch, apparently another brother-in-law of Joseph. Since he has the same calculated year of birth, this might also still be Milley's brother:[7]

Name Relation Status Sex Age Birth Place
Joseph Schindler Head Married M 69 Germany
Millie J U Schindler Wife Married F 52 Germany
Herman Burch Brother-in-law Single M 75 Germany

According to the 1910 census, Joseph had emigrated in 1871 and was naturalized, while his wife only had come in 1878. They didn't have children.[7]

Joseph Schindler died at 13 February 1923 at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he had been at since 5 February. He was retired and survived by his wife. They were living at 7921 Tioga Street. He was cremated on 15 February.[8]

Research notes

There's a letter of intention on becoming naturalized filed by a Joseph Schindler on 30 July 1877. This might be him.[9]

There are two potential passenger list entries:

  • a 30 years old farmer from Baden immigrating on 30 April 1870 on Donan from Bremen[10]
  • a 30 years old tailor from Germany immigrating on 10 April 1871 on Cimbria from Hamburg[11]

His obituary states immigration 54 years before his death in February 1923, which would be around 1869. It also states that he's survived by three sisters in Germany, which might help determining the earliest death of three of his five sisters.[12]
