Matilda was born in 1816. She is the daughter of David Savage and Hannah Edson.
Matilda was born 15 Jan 1816, at Bangor, Maine. She was the daughter of David and Hannah Martha (Edson) Savage. She was the fifth of eleven children.
She married Joseph Chandler, 16 Nov 1843, at Fulton, Illinois.[1] They had five children, Elizabeth, Erastus, Harriet, Thomas, and Emery. Erastus, who was Elizabeth's twin, died as a small child. In 1850 and 1860, the family was residing in Grant County, Wisconsin, where Joseph worked as a carpenter.[2][3] In 1870, 54-year-old Matilda was residing at Madison Township, Fremont County, Iowa, with his husband, Joseph; teenage son Emery; and three-year-old granddaughter, Kate Farmer.[4]
Matilda passed away 7 Aug 1879, at Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa. She was 63 years old. Some sources claim she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but this has yet to be verified with primary sources.
