Biography

Joseph was born 15 Dec 1820, in Ohio. He was the son of Thomas Chandler and Mary Wilson.

He married Matilda Savage, 16 Nov 1843, at Fulton, Illinois.[1] They had five children, Elizabeth, Erastus, Harriet, Thomas, and Emery. Erastus, who was Elizabeth's twin, died as a small child.

In 1850 and 1860, the family was residing in Grant County, Wisconsin, where Joseph worked as a carpenter. Residing next door in 1850 was Joseph's younger brother, Thomas, and his wife Almira.[2][3]

In 1870, 49-year-old Joseph was farming at Madison Township, Fremont County, Iowa, with his wife, Matilda; son Emery; and three-year-old granddaughter, Kate Farmer.[4]

Joseph's wife passed away on 7 Aug 1879, at age 63. Following her death, Joseph appears to have sold his farm in Madison Township and, in 1880, was working as a grain dealer in the city of Riverton, Fremont County, Iowa. Residing with him was his now-thirteen-year-old granddaughter, Kate Farmer.[5]

By 1885, it appears that Joseph had married a second wife, Maria Hand, who some claim was the widow of his uncle, Shadrack Chandler. In 1885, Joseph was still residing in Riverton, where, at age 64, he continued to work as a grain dealer. Still residing with Joseph and his new wife, that year, was his eighteen-year-old granddaughter, Kate Farmer.[6]

On 7 Mar 1895, Joseph married a third wife, Rachael Lloyd, at Hamburg. She was the mother of nine children, of which five were still living. In 1900, the couple was residing in Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa, where Joseph, now age 79, was a landlord.[7]

Joseph died 2 Jan 1904, at Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa. He was 83 years old. Joseph was buried at Mount Olive Cemetery in Hamburg.[8]
