Biography

James E. Rowland, born 24 Oct 1814, was a son of Henry Augustus Rowland (1764-1835) & Frances (Bliss) Rowland (1772-1833), thus he belonged to a notable literary family.

James graduated Yale University as a physician. He became a Presbyterian minister.

He married in 1836 Catherine Avery Morgan. They had 3 children:

1. Henry Augustus Rowland, b. 5 Feb 1837; unmarried; d. 4 Jan 1863 @ Columbus, Ohio
2. William Frederick Rowland, b. 10 May 1842; married in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Isabella M. MacKinnell; 3 children; U.S. consul, Nice, France; d. 3 Aug 1883 in Switzerland
3. George Rowland, b. 15 May 1845; married 1) Dec 1870 Maria T. Durfee; 2) 4 Jun 1913 Emily H. (Brown) Tillinghast; 6 children

This family migrated from Connecticut to Ohio about 1840.

The 1850 census enumerated this family in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.

Rev. J. E. Rowland died 9 Nov 1854.

His widow, Catherine Avery (Morgan) Rowland, married (2nd) in May 1861 Charles Dresback.
