Ron went on to play baseball at the collegiate level while attending San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas [5]. He later transferred to Our Lady of the Lake University's Houston weekend college campus, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing in 1993 [8].
Ron and his future wife Deborah "Debbie" Gehlert met in 1981 at Browning-Ferris Industries' (BFI) corporate office in Houston, where they both worked in the accounting department [5]. When they married in 1983 [9], Ron became the stepfather to Debbie's 4-year old daughterMarisa (Schield) Martin. Ron views Marisa as his daughter and her children as his grandchildren [5]. Ron and Debbie had two children:
Ron encouraged his children to play sports and engage in a variety of activities. He enjoyed attending their volleyball and basketball games, swim and gymnastics meets, dance recitals, scout and Indian Guide/Indian Princess events, and devoted many years to coaching their various soccer, softball, and baseball teams. Ron served on the board of Katy National Little League for ten years, in positions ranging from player development, equipment management, and organization president [5].
Ron left BFI in 1992 to begin a new career in building materials sales, joining the William Cameron Company. which was then located at I-45 South and Cullen Boulevard near downtown Houston [5]. After several years, Ron joined the sales team at BMC corporation, which merged into Builders First Source in 2021. Through his career, Ron has supplied building materials for hundreds of neighborhoods and thousands of homes in the greater Houston metropolitan area, including Clear Lake City, Cinco Ranch in Katy, the Woodlands, and other notable developments. In the mid 1990's through 2008, Ron built 15 beach houses in the Galveston, Texas resort communities of Pirate's Beach and Pirate's Beach West. All of his beach houses withstood several powerful hurricanes, including Hurricane Ike (2008) which devastated much of Galveston. Ron was one of the first Galveston homebuilders to use hurricane-rated reinforced windows in his houses, personally driving from Texas to Florida to pick them up since there wasn't a local distributer [5].
After raising their family in Katy, Texas, Ron and Debbie moved to Brookshire, Texas in 2017 [12] [13] [14].
