Captain Philip Simons Picot (1889-1915) was the son of Major Francis Slater Picot (1859-1930) and his wife Ada Melvill Simons (1860-1915). He was baptised on 5 June 1889 at St. Jude's church, West Kensington, London, England[1].
In the UK Census of 1911 he was recorded at the Cambourne School of Mines Club, Camborne, Cornwall, England. Aged 21 and single.
At the age of 24 he married 22 year old Marjorie Putnam (the daughter of Sir Captain Thomas Putnam and Minnie Newman) on the 29th of November 1912 in St. Jude's church, West Kensington, London, England, after Banns. Philip was a mining engineer at the Eastern Smelting Co. Ltd, living in Cornwall at the time.
They had one daughter.
His mother died in February 1915 at the age of 55.
When the 1st World War broke out Philip was a Captain in the 14th Sherwood Foresters but volunteered for active service. He was sent out to the Dardanelles, going straight into the trenches and taking over command of the 1st Battalion 5th Royal Scots. After being under attack from the Turks for three consecutive nights, he was ordered to take his men out of the trenches for some much needed relief. On finding some of his men missing on roll call, he went out to search for his wounded men, but was himself shot in the head. He was found, but died half an hour later.
The date was 11th of July 1915; he was just 26 years of age.[2]. He was entitled to the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914-15 Medal.
His will was proved on 10 September 1915 at London to Francis Slater Picot, retired Lieutenant Colonel HM Army and James George Cotton Minchin, Solicitor.[3] Effects: £5995, 6s. 8d.
