Biography

Francis was born in 1859 in Australia. He was the son of Philip Henry Picot and Mary Harrison Padmore.

He was baptised on 22 June 1860 at St Peter's, Eastern Hill, Vcitoria, Australia. His father was a Grocer.[1]

He emigrated from Australia to England. In 1881 he was in the 99th Foot and was gazetted to be Lieutenant.[2]

Francis married Ada Melville Simons (the widow of Captain Henry Rich of the Royal Engineers) on 16 July 1888 at the church of St Jude, South Kensington, Middlesex. Ada was aged 28 and Francis was 29, a Lieutenant Adjutant with the 2nd Wiltshire Regiment.[3]

They had at least two children.

UK Census Event Date 1891: Living with his wife and two young children Philip and Gladys in Langley Road, Langley Burrell, Wiltshire, England. Aged 36. Also in the household were four servants.

Occupation: Captain & Adjutant 2nd

During the 1st World War Francis (a former commandant of a military prison) had been brought out of retirement to run a German prisoner of War Camp called Donington Hall in North West Leicestershire. Gunther Plüschow, the only German to escape from Britain during 1914-1918, escaped from this camp.[[1]]

Sadly his wife Ada died in February 1915, followed by his only son Philip, who was killed in the 1st World War in July 1915.

Francis was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG).

In the 1939 England and Wales Register Francis was living at 141 Ashley Gardens, City of Westminster, London. Also in the household was his widowed daughter Gladys Carter and Charlotte Webb.

Occupation: Lt. Colonel (Retired)

Francis died in 1939 at the age of 80.[5]

DEATHS
PICOT—On October 12th, 1939, suddenly in Leicestershire, Francis Slater Picot. C.M.G., late of The Wiltshire Regiment, aged 80, father of Gladys Violet Carter, of 141 Ashley Gardens, S.W. and the late Captain Philip Simons Picot.[6]

His will was proved on 29 February 1940 at London to Gustave Michael de Lembeke, of no occupation and Thomas James Worley, solicitor. Effects: £16158 13s. 7d.
