George Payne lived in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

George was born in 1838 in Grainger, Tennessee, United States. He was the son of William Payne and Ann M Thomas.[1]

In the 1850 census George (age about 12) was living in Rockcastle, Kentucky.[2]

In the 1860 census George (age about 22) was living in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle, Kentucky.[3]

George served in the military on 2 August 1862 in Tennessee. Discharged from army for medical reasons.

On 1 July 1863 George (age about 25) was living in Rockcastle, Kentucky.[8]

George died at the age of about 29 on 6 June 1867 in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle, Kentucky. Age: 29 Cause: Heart Disease.[9]

George was buried on 7 June 1867 in Mount Vernon, KY.[9]

Research Notes

  • George W Payne was a Civil War veteran. He was discharged from the military due to "hypotrophy of the heart, which causes great palpatations". He was unable to march an distance or perform any duties. Most of his service was spent watching others. Prior to enlisting he was the Mt. Vernon jailer.'.
