Olmstead Mitchell Payne was born in 1865 in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle, Kentucky, United States, son of George William Payne (1838 - 1867) and Elizabeth (Drew) Lake (1844 - 1902). His father died when he was barely a toddler from the injuries gained during the Civil War.
His mother remarried John Wesley Lake (1848-1938) in April 1870. The family lived in District 4 of Rockcastle County, which borders Jackson County. John (21) is a farmer. [1]
Within 10 years, the family moved to Horse Lick to Jackson County and added five children. There are other Lakes families around them.[2]

When OM was about 24, he married fifteen-year-old Martha Jane Abney (born in Rockcastle on 11 Feb 1874; died in Rockcastle on 26 Feb 1949), daughter of Archibald Taylor Abney and Nancy Barker Allen.[3] on 24 July 1889.
In March 1894, Olmstead purchased 55 1/2 acres from John and Matilda Ogg for $500. The property is located in Rockcastle County. On the deed, it notes that Olmstead lives in Rockcastle County. In this area, he would eventually build Payne's General Store. He will remain on this property the rest of his life.
In the 1900 census, the family expanded with four children. OM works the farm. He is literate and so is his wife Martha.[5]

By 1910, the couple had been married for over 20 years and had ten children. Nine of the children lived with them. OM opened his General Store. The families name is spelled incorrectly as Reyne. His oldest son George has married and is the neighbor.[6]

In Oct 1912, OM became the postmaster of Disputanta Post Office. The Post Office gave folks and customer a reason to visit the store.
In the 1920 census Armyss M (age 54) was the married head of household in Rockcastle, Kentucky.[7]

In the 1930 census OM (age about 65) was living in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle, Kentucky].[8]
In the 1940 census OM (age about 75) was living in Mount Vernon.[9]
OM died at the age of a stroke on 22 January 1951 in Mt. Vernon. [10] He is buried in AT Abney Memorial Garden next to the Macedonia Church.[11]
