Biography

WikiTree Day Attendee: 2023
.
Chris Orme is a member of the Orme Name Study Project.

In 2010 my Father-in-law got me interested in researching my family history and taught me some important genealogy basics. In 2012, as my research progressed, I chose WikiTree to collaborate with others. I am hugely grateful to the fantastic WikiTree community for all their help.

Family members from England, Wales, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Germany have found their ancestors on WikiTree and generously shared memories and wonderful family treasures, including photographs, family trees, letters, newpaper arictles, diaries and much more! I am so grateful!

As well as the family tree, there are special pages, relating to different branches of the family, some of which may be of interest to you:

  1. Orme
    • A wonderful Anniversary Book kept by Lydia (Green) Orme, containing a first hand record of birth dates and special family events. Where I have been able to identify the person in the entry, I have included a link to their WikiTree profile. Can you help to identify more of the people Lydia names, or perhaps add some additional information? If so, please contact me.
    • Orme Collection of Cousins gathering, two wonderful events at the Swallow Hotel in Sheffied in 1992 and 1998. Are you a cousin? Please contact me today, I'd love to hear from you!
    • Orme surname project. If you are an Orme, have Orme connections or for any reason are researching an Orme, you may be interested in taking a look!
  2. Wilson
  3. Watson

I love making contact with family members (close or distant), to share family history notes and maybe some old photos - or just to say "Hello". So, if you think we may have a connection (however remote), do please contact me or just leave a comment below!

Hello Chris. Your very recent post regarding your Withy ancestor prompts this post.

Your ancestor was the younger brother of my great grandfather Edward Withy. Edward was the founder of the Withy side of the shipping company Furness Withy in Hartlepool. He does not show in the 1861 Census where your ancestor was in Bristol with his mother Sarah and other family members. The reason is he was by then at age 17 a marine architect apprentice in Stockton-on-Tees. He was the oldest sibling and others in the family including your ancestor and Henry (who retired from Furnace Withy in 1918) followed him. Edward moved to Hartlepool as the Tees River at Stockton was becoming silted and the centre of ship-building moved. I have the model steam engine that Edward made as an apprenticeship requirement, and could forward a photo by email if you are interested. My email is [email address removed] You as a vicar may be interested to know the christian DNA is alive in this non-conformist branch of the family as I am scheduled to preach Sunday. We attend a community church and descend through the Quaker stream (Edward and Albert attended Quaker Schools) via Methodism. Edward married a Free Methodist and swapped stables. In those days the Quaker Door shut behind you when you did that. Enough for now but I would be delighted to connect (from New Zealand), and learn more about you and yours. We appear to be of similar age and interests. (Edward emigrated in 1884 and brought his large family here, most of which are Kiwis.)

Hi Chris,

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's six-monthly check-in with our project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we do not hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Hi Chris!

I hope you're keeping well. I'm fine here and still enjoying retirement (even in these global pandemic times).

If I recall correctly, some time ago you told me that you could not see any connection between the Orme family who migrated to Australia (William Wheeley Orme and Amelia 'Elizabeth' Jeffrey/Jeffery) and your Orme family.

I see that you recently made some changes to the Australian Orme family - for which I'm grateful to you - and I am wondering whether or not you have still found no link(s)?

Cheers Daryl Murphy

Hello Joan, I’m so sorry not to have replied to your earlier message! The fact is, I love what the England project is doing and would like to be a part of it but always have so many other things going on! If you need to remove me as a member, I understand.

Thanks Chris,

If you are happy, and occasionally contributing to the project that is fine. We know people have have other interests and cannot work on England all the time. Regards Joan

Hi Chris

I would to thank you for all your contributions towards the goals of the England Project during the past six months. We've achieved a huge amount during this period and we couldn't have done it without you and our other project members.

As the England Project Leaders, we are completing our six monthly check-in with all project members.

Are you happy to stay in your current project teams? Which teams are you most active in? Are there other teams you would like to join or become more active in?

Also, do you have any feedback on what the project is doing well and anything we could do better in the future?

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Hi Chris,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Lizzie, Amy, Joan

Welcome to the Connectors Project! Be sure to check out the Connectors project page to see some of what we do, our To-Do lists which have folks who need connected to our Global Tree, and please add the connectors tag to your G2G feed. We've also got a great sub-project, Connectors Chat, where we talk about what we're working on and where we'd like to help out. If you're new to making connections and want some simplified connections to work on, look at our Connecting Buddies page. Thanks for joining us!

I fully support and agree to the nine simple rules. I am a full-time vicar in Leeds and I don't have a great deal of free time but have been enjoying working on my family tree for about three years. I am encouraged on my way by my father-in-law, who is something of an expert. I would love to join this community and colaborate on quality genealogical research.
