Biography

Andrea Oliveri is born and baptized on 18 February 1839. He is the son of Salvatore Oliveri and Biagia Paternostro. His godparents are Leoluca Oliveri and Liboria Streva, wife of Giuseppe. His godfather is his paternal uncle, and his godmother is his future mother-in-law.

Andrea is a peasant (contadino) in an 1884 Italian civil record, at the birth of his daughter. When he travels to New York in 1903, the manifest lists his occupation as "Civil," which may indicate he is now a "Civile," an enfranchised property owner. He marries Rosaria Streva (sometimes known as Rosa) on 24 January 1864. This marriage receives a dispensation for consanguinity. Andrea and Rosaria are second cousins, once removed. Salvatore has died by this time and Biagia is still living.

Andrea and Rosaria have at least ten children together: two daughters named Biagia (1865 and 1877), Francesca Paola (1868), Salvatore (1870), Mattea (1873), Vincenzo (1875), Giuseppe (c. 1880), Giuseppa (1884), Giovanni (1886), and Angela (1888).

See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

The first girl named Biagia is born and baptized Blasiam on 21 October 1865. This record calls her mother Rosa Streva. Her godparents are Calogero Cutrera and Bernarda Colletto, a married couple.
Francesca Paola is born and baptized on 15 February 1868. Her godfather is Francesco Grizzaffi.
Salvatore is born 23 June 1870 and baptized the next day. His godfather is the unmarried Rosario Dragna.
Mattea is born 21 March 1873 and baptized Mattheam the next day. Her godparents are Antonino Saporito and Anna di Fulco, a married couple.

Biagia dies on 23 June 1875, at age ten.

Vincenzo is born 24 May 1875 and baptized two days later as Vincentium. His godparents are Antonio di Carlo and Maria Crocilla, a married couple. A note beneath his baptismal record says that Vincenzo marries in New York at the Church of Santa Anna on 7 September 1919 with Maria Blicha.
The second Biagia is born and baptized Blasiam on 12 November 1877. Her godmother is Calogera di Palermo, wife of Giuseppe Dragna.
Giuseppe is known from the record of his death in infancy, on 18 July 1880.
From the civil record of Giuseppa's birth on 21 February 1884, we know Andrea's approximate birth year, the family's address at #2 via Voltata Santi, Corleone, and Andrea's class/occupation.

One of the witnesses is Gaspare Cascio, age 39 (b. 1845), an agricola (farmer). Though the two men are of similar ages and the words have similar meanings, one is labeled a contadino and the other, agricola.

Giuseppa dies, according to the Church record, at eleven months of age on 11 January 1885.

Giovanni is known from the record of his death, at two months of age (June) on 5 August 1886.
Angela is born 22 August 1888 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe Gaglianello and Anna Maria, his unmarried daughter.

Francesca Paola marries Leoluca Russo on 9 October 1892. Andrea and Rosaria are both still living.

On the SS Sempione sailing from Naples 18 October 1899 and arriving in the port of New York, these passengers from Corleone appear together on the manifest. They are all bound for New York. The addresses of their contacts are hard to read:

All are bound for New York.[1]

Bill Feather lists Andrea Oliveri, who immigrates to New York from Corleone in 1899, as a known member of the Mafia.[2] Andrea's son-in-law is Tommy Reina, who married his daughter, Angelina, in 1906.

In 1900, his wife and one of his daughters join him. Liboria is 18 (b. 1882), her mother, Rosaria, age 54 (b. 1846), sail to New York on the SS Vincenzo Florio, which departed from Naples, arriving on 9 June 1900. Andrea pays their passage. Also going to her father at 3110 105th St, near 2nd Ave, are Bernardo Sabella, 46 (b. 1854), and Anna Sabella, 19 (b. 1881). Andrea is Bernardo's brother-in-law.[3][4]

Andrea appears on the manifest of the SS Nord America, arriving in New York on 30 January 1903. He is joining his wife Rosaria Streva at 311 E 105th St NY. Under occupation for him it says "Civil." (Like "Civile", which means something like "borgese"?) He is reportedly 66 years old (b. 1836---he is almost 64). No one else from Corleone travels with him.[5]

In the 1910 federal census of Manhattan, ED 344, taken 18 April, Andrea Olivero, 70 (b. 1840), heads a household at 346-348 105th St. with his wife Rosaria, 64 (b. 1846), and children Francesca, 34 (b. 1876), Bracchia (Biagia), 23 (b. 1887), Michelina, 26 (b. 1884), and Bonita (Liboria), 19 (b. 1891---reportedly older at emigration). Andrea and his wife have been married for 45 years. Rosaria has had four children, all living. The family members were all born in Italy and emigrated in 1898. Francesca, Michelina, and Bonita are strippers in a tobacco factory. [6]

In the 1915 New York state census of AD 24/ED 17, taken 1 June, two Olivera families appear in the same address at 346 105th St. Salvatore Olivera, 40 (b. 1875), a peddler, native of Italy, resident of the US for 20 years (since 1895), lives with his wife Annita, 28 (b. 1892), in the US for 6 years (since 1909), and their children Andrew, 4 (b. 1911), Rose, 3 (b. 1912),and Maria, 64 days (b. Marc 1915). Also in the household are Salvatore’s parents Andrew Olivera, 65 (b. 1850), and Rosaria, 66 (b. 1849), and their daughters Frances, 44 (b. 1871), who is sick at home, Mattea, 33 (b. 1882---she is 42), a cigar maker, and Bonetta, 27 (b. 1888), same.[7]

Andrea Oliveri, born 8 Feb 1839 in Corleone, dies 15 January 1918 at age 78 in Manhattan. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens.[8]

His wife, Rosaria, dies 18 January 1925 at age 78 in Manhattan. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens.[9]

Mattea “Martha” Oliveri Farinella, born 21 March 1873 in Corleone, dies 6 December 1966 at age 93 in New York. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.[10]
