Newry Harbour Master’s death

REGRET is felt wherever he has been known at the death of Captain Patrick O’Keeffe, Harbour Master, which has taken place after a brief illness and at a comparatively early age.

Deceased was for about twenty years a captain on the line of cross-Channel vessels sailing for Messrs. Joseph Fisher and Sons, Newry, and about two years ago, on the death of the previous harbour master of Newry, Mr. Simon Casey, he was appointed to that position by the Newry Port and Harbour Trust.

Captain O’Keefe, by his ability in his calling, his conscientious attention to duty and his friendly and courteous manner, won the admiration and friendship of all with whom he came in contact, and whose heartfelt sympathy goes forth to his wife and family in the great loss they have sustained.

His death took place in Daisy Hill Hospital, following which the remains were removed to his residence, “Bonvista,” Dromalane Road. On Wednesday they were brought to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Cloughoge, where Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday morning.

The funeral subsequently took place to St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newry, the large and representative cortege including members and officials of the Port and Harbour Trust and many sea-faring folk of the past and present who held Captain O’Keeffe in the highest esteem and deeply mourn his death.

Very Rev. P. J. Canon Toner, P.P., Upper Killeavy, and Rev. K. Mahon, C.C., do., officiated in the church and at the graveside.

In addition to his wife, Captain O’Keeffe is survived by three sons –Michael, Pat and Brian-two daughters-Mrs. James Hall, Glasgow, and Miss Kathleen O’Keeffe, Newry-two brothers and other relatives.[1]
