Biography

Florence Mumford was born on 20 December 1894 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, daughter of Frederick Mumford and Elizabeth Keating.[1]

On 1 June 1900, Frederick A. and Elizabeth and their children Florence M., Maria A., and Baby (female) lived at 74 Clark Street in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. Frederick was a railroad conductor. [2]

On 19 April 1910, Fred and Elizabeth lived at 3636 W. 26th Street in Denver, Denver County, Colorado, along with their children Florence, Marie, Elizabeth, Frances, Josephine, and Helen. Fred was the proprietor of a feed store. [3]

Florence was married circa 1915 to Fay F. Morgan

On 21 January 1920, Fay F. and Florence Morgan and their children Jack and Richard, Fay's brother in law James Johnson, James's wife Francis, and their son Harvey F. Johnson lived on Page Street in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Fay worked as a railroad clerk.[4]

Fay F. Morgan filed for divorce against Florence H. Morgan in December 1929. He claimed she had deserted him.[5][6]

In April 1930, Florence Morgan, listed as a a widow, was living at 224 Washington Street in Redwood City, San Mateo County, California. Her sons Victor and Jack and two lodgers, Robert Covey and Harry Peterson, lived with her. She did not own a radio. She worked as a telephone operator.[7]

Florence was married second on 27 June 1931 in Pacific Grove, California to Newell F. Sharkey.[8]

In March 1933, Florence was a member of the Eurydice Choral Club in San Carlos. The group was to sing two selections at the road show held by the San Carlos Parent-Teacher Association.[9] In July 1933, she was one of the high scorers at a bridge and whist card playing party in San Carlos at the Belmont American Legion Hall.[10]

On 16 April 1940, Newell and Florence Sharkey lived at 438 Palm Avenue in San Carlos, San Mateo County, California. They owned their home, valued at $5,000. Newell was a station owner for a major oil company.[11]

During World War II Florence Sharkey was an Air Observer for the Belmont Air Warning Observation Post. They were tasked with recording every airplane that passed through the district. Florence had spent more than 100 hours watching for planes.[12]

In January 1944, San Carlos had four ambulances and was prepared to dispatch them 24 hours a day. Florence was "to report at the first station to investigate each fire call and be prepared to call any or all of the four ambulances."[13]

Newell was elected mayor of San Carlos.

On 1 April 1950, Newell F. and Florence H. Sharkey lived at 438 Vista Avenue in San Carlos, San Mateo County, California. Newell worked as the manager of a filling station for a major oil company.[14]

In August 1952, Florence filed a suit for separate maintenance against William, "accusing her husband of striking and abusing her....She asked for a division of community property, reasonable alimony and injunctions to prevent Sharkey from drawing money from his two bank accounts."[15]

Florence filed for divorce which was granted an interlocutory decree on 6 February 1953.[16] The final divorce decree was granted in February 1954.[17]

In April 1954, Florence reported that her ex-husband Newell Sharkey, a candidate for re-election to the San Carlos Council, had not resided at the place he was registered to vote at, and was thus ineligible to be elected again. The City Attorney stated that he should Sharkey could still be considered a resident.[18]

Florence died on 4 December 1988 in San Mateo County, California.[19]

Florence was buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo County, California.[20]
