Biography

Charles Henry Mosley is said to have been born on September 26, 1842, in Lisbon, Portugal. He was a son of George Mosley and Louisa Coward Mosley.

By the time of the UK census of 1861, Charles has returned to England with his parents and other members of his family and he is living at 42 Melbourne Terrace, Ardwick, Lancashire. He is 18 years of age but he lists no occupation.

At this point in time, we have no other data that we can tie with certainty to this Charles Henry Mosley. Did he marry and have children?

What we do know, however, is that, first:

  • On March 8, 1867, a 24-year-old Charles Henry Mosley joins the Blair Lodge of the Masons in Hulme. He states that he is a "Merchant" and lives at 24 Carter Street, Greenheys, Hulme.

Is this the right Charles Henry Mosley? It seems at least probable, but some additional substantiating evidence would be helpful!

Second:

  • On September 25, 1867, a Charles Henry Mosley was married to a woman called Hannah Swire at St. Bride's, Fleet Street, City of London, London. This Charles Henry Mosley states that he is a "Merchant" and that his father was George Mosley (also a "Merchant"). Hannah Swire states that her father is William Swire, a "Pawnbroker".

And third:

  • At the time of the 1871 census, Charles Henry's younger brother, Antonio Felix Mosley, is living with a woman called Hannah Mosley at a house on the Stockport Road in Heaton Norris, Lancashire. She has told the census taker that she is the "Wife of head" of the family; that she is 28 years of age and born in Royton, Lancashire (6 miles north and west of Manchester); and that Antonio (then aged 16) is her brother-in-law.

Is any or all of this information enough to confirm that "our" Charles Henry Mosley was married in 1867 to a woman called Hannah Swire? Probably not, but it is compellingly suggestive, and there may be a daughter of this relationship.

What we also do not know is when and where this Charles Henry Mosley may have died.
