Biography

Sarah Ann ("Sara") Mosley was born on April 19, 1837, perhaps at Hulme, near Manchester, Lancashire, England. She was the eldest child of George Mosley and Louisa Coward Mosley.

Her mother was no more than 15 years of age at the time of her birth, and Sarah Ann was baptized on June 15, 1838, at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, St. Denys, and St. George, Manchester (where her mother had been baptized less than 15 years earlier). The family was definitely living at Moss Lane, Hulme, at the time of this baptism and her father lists his occupation as a "Warehouseman".

By the time she was 3, Sarah Ann was living in Lisbon, Portugal, and she may have grown up speaking better Portuguese than English! She would return to England in 1853 or early 1854.

By the time of the UK census in 1861, Sarah was living at 42 Melbourne Terrace, Ardwick, Manchester. Her mother had died and she was probably "keeping house" for her father, nine younger siblings, and her maternal grandmother. However, ...

On February 12, 1866, Sarah married Thomas William Heelis at Christ Church, Moss Side, Manchester. Their marriage was recorded at Chorlton, Lancashire, in the April quarter of the year. Thomas William Heelis was a solicitor, based at Bolton-le-Moors. They would have two children by 1873:

  • Ada Isabella (Heelis) Heelis (1868-1919)
  • Thomas Heelis (1873-1874)

Over the 40 years from 1871 to 1911 we can track Sarah Ann (Mosley) Heelis living at:

  • 25 Park Hill Place, Little Bolton, Lancashire (in the 1871 census data)
  • "Clarebank", Chorley New Road, Heaton, Lancashire (in the 1881 and 1891 census data
  • "Vale Bank", Lever Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire (in the 1901 census data)
  • Wycherley, Heaton, Bolton, Lancashire (in the 1911 census data)

Sarah Ann passed away on May 27, 1917, at Wycherley, Heaton, Bolton. Her death was registered at Bolton in the April quarter of that year. She was 80 years of age and had outlived nearly all of her younger brothers and sisters.
