Biography

This profile is part of the Moseley Name Study.

In 1745 he was a Jacobite sympathise, and seems to have secretly harboured Prince Charles Edward the year before the Rising. [1]

Birth

Sir Oswald Mosley, 1st Bt. was born on 28 July 1674. He was the son of Oswald Moseley and Mary Yates. He was baptised on 11 August 1674 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England. [2]

Education

He was admitted to Gray's Inn. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He inherited the Hulme and Manchester estates from his cousin Anne Lady Bland. [3]

Marriage

He married Elizabeth Thornhaugh, daughter of John Thornhaugh and Elizabeth Earle, on 4 February 1702/3 at Our Lady & St Cuthbert Priory, Worksop [4]Mr Oswald Mosely and Madam Elizabeth Thornhagh

Titles and Offices

He held the office of High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1715. He built Manchester's first Exchange building. He was created 1st Baronet Mosley, of Rolleston, co. Staffs [Great Britain] on 18 June 1720. [5]

Death

He died at St James, Bath 2 June 1751 and was buried at Rolleston Staffordshire on the 10th.[6]

I Oswald Mosley of Rolleston in the County of Stafford Baronet…….Whereas by my marriage settlement the Trustees therein named are authorised and empowered by Rents and Profits of the Trust Premises therein specified or by Mortgage thereof to raise portions for younger children particularly if as therein expressed if Oswald Mosley the younger now Sir Oswald Mosley shall have one younger son and one daughter on the body of Elizabeth Thornhagh which is the present case the sum of four thousand pounds to be divided equally between them of this my mind and Will is that my daughter shall have halfe viz: two thousand pound I likewise given to her the Estate I purchased of Mr Stringer of Manchester lying in Salford a Town joining to Manchester to have and to hold to her and her heirs forever the value of which is equivalent to one thousand two hundred pounds be it more or less likewise I give to her a Mortgage in Mr Sisles lands excepting the interest due to this time and the time this my Mill may take Effect which Mortgage is for the sum of one thousand pounds likewise I give to her the following Bills or Notes on Mr Crompton Banker in Darby viz: Notes 941,943 oath 200 944 945 oath 100 358 946 947 948 949 950 942 for one hundred pounds in all…the sum is six thousand twenty pounds To my son John I Release all my Right Tithe and Claim to the Estate at Clayton in the Moors in the County of Lancaster which I purchased which is in value three thousand pounds be it more or less likewise I will that he shall have the other half of the Money chargeable on the Estate in the Marriage Settlemen Viz: two thousand pounds likewise I give to him 9 Bill or Notes on the foresaid Mr Crompton in the hands of my servant William Thackeray amounting to nine hundred pounds and my Will is that one hundred pounds more shall be raised out of my Rents and be given to my son John to make the foregoing gifts six thousand pounds Item I give to Lady Mosley my dear Wife all the lands which I have purchased in the County of Stafford to have and to hold for the Term of her life likewise I give to her the Mortgage I have from Mr William Buxton and the Writings thereunto belonging likewise I give to her my best Coach my horses….on the demesne lands at Rolleston the plate I have in the house there and Bath and the furnitures….I give unto my Oswald all my study of Books at Ancoats Rolleston and Bath and my mind and Will is that they be preserved and continued to the heirs of the family successively as they were given me ….unto my sister Frances Thornhagh ten pounds…to my sister Mary Thornhagh ten pounds…..servant William Buxton….servant William Thackeray….I make my son Oswald my sole executor[7]
