Biography

Anthony was born in April 5, 1834, in Basel Switzerland of German parents. He immigrated to the United States with his father Anton and 4 brothers. They arrived at New Orleans on 18 Jan 1847 on the ship "Riga" which salied from Le Havre, France. [1] Their names and ages appear as Anton Moser (50), Tobias (18), Lucas (14), Anton (7), Johann (3), and Joseph (1). His mother, Franciska Moser (43), and sister, Marie (7), were listed in a different section of the passenger manifest on the same ship.

The family began farming at HIghland, Madison, Illinois and are listed in the 1850 census, including the mother, Franciska. [2] In 1856, all seven of them appear in one household on the Iowa State Census for Jefferson, Clayton County. [3]

On June 15, 1861 Anthony married Euphrasia Zereda Barnett [4][5] [6] Anthony and Zereda had their first child, Frances on April 24, 1862 in Millville, Clayton County Iowa. On August 25, 1862 Anthony enlisted in the Union Army and served until the end of the war.[7] Anthony was a prisoner of war for over 7 months and became very ill and malnourished.[6] [5]

For the next 50-plus years Anthony homesteaded and farmed in Nebraska and Iowa, improving and then selling several properties. During this time he and Frances had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. [5].

From at least 1907 on, Anthony received a pension as an invalid veteran. [8] In his later years he visited his children throughout the western states, and died in Merriman, Cherry County, Nebraska on October 8, 1922 [9] He is buried at Merriman Cemetery , Merriman, Cherry County, Nebraska, USA.
