Biography

Lewis Morgan was born in Merionethshire, Wales about 1678. He is mentioned in the Will of his father Morgan Cadwalader of the parish of Llanvawr (Llanfor), Merionethshire, dated 4 April, 1696. Proved 11 May, 1696 (Glenn pg 69[1]) Note, following the Welsh tradition, Lewis' last name is the same as his father's first name. Lewis Morgan, aka Lewis ap Morgan, Lewis, son of Morgan.

Lewis Morgan emigrated from Wales to Pennsylvania between 1696 (the date of his father's Will) and 1711, the date of his brother, Cadwalader's Will.

Lewis Morgan is listed on the tax lists for London Britain Township, Chester, Pennsylvania beginning 1725 thru 1740. The tax list rate indicates he was married. From 1725 thru 1734, he is listed next to Thomas Morgan. In 1734, the tax list also includes Morgan Morgan and John Morgan. In 1735, Thomas Morgan appears to have moved away and Lewis is listed next to Morgan Morgan and John Morgan. Then, in 1737 and 1738, he is listed next to Morgan Morgan only. In 1740, he is listed next to Morgan Morgan and John Morgan.[2]

Lewis passed after 1740 when he is named on tax lists in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Phebe Morgan’s research: (Modified to remove parts that are based on the incorrect conclusion of Browning, that Lewis was the son of James Morgan) “In the will of Cadwaller Morgan dated September 10, 1711, and proven October 10, 1711, in Philadelphia (Will Book C, p. 259); he names his brothers John and Lewis Morgan and his brother's wife Elizabeth Morgan and states she has children. Cadwaller Morgan was a stanch Quaker minister and the early Quaker records speak about his prosecution in Wales and his early entrance into Pennsylvania [1683]. Lewis and Elizabeth can not be found in any early Quaker records. The Morgan's listed on the Chester County Tax Rolls were living in a Baptist community in London Britain Township. ....(part with James as father omitted) Other than the tax records in Chester County, the name Lewis Morgan does not appear. The tax records in Chester County stop for a period of time in 1740. .... (Conjecture based on James omitted)[3]

Burial: Charlestown Presbyterian Graveyard in Charlestown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA.[4]

Research Notes

James Morgan is not the father of Cadwalader Morgan and the brothers, Lewis and John he mentioned in his Will. The data:

- - James Morgan , died 1691, had a son John Morgan of Radnor who inherited.
- - The Will of Cadwalader Morgan in 1711, mentions brothers Lewis Morgan and John Morgan (possibly John Morgan).
- - James sons were named John, Evan and James (no Cadwalader or Lewis) (often missed fact)

Conclusion: John Morgan the son of James is not John Morgan the brother of Cadwalader Morgan and Lewis Morgan. See section Parents in the profile of Cadwalader Morgan to see the criteria Glenn used to find his father.

Burial location may not be correct. The Charlestown Presbyterian Graveyard (aka "Old Chestertown Cemetery") was established in 1743.[5]

Lewis Morgan's father, Morgan Cadwalader, did not migrate to North America. He died in Wales. Morgan Cadwalader's 1696 Will names sons John, Robert, Lewis and David. Following the Welsh tradition, they used their father's first name, Morgan, as their last name. Read as Lewis ap (son of) Morgan.

Based on the Will of Cadwalader Morgan dated 1711, who migrated to PA in 1683, and who named brothers John Morgan and Lewis Morgan, Glenn concluded that their father was Morgan Cadwalader. In Wales back the, giving you son your last name was a way of naming a son after yourself.
