Biography

Flag of Denbighshire
Edith Morcom was born in Minera, Denbighshire, Wales.

Early Life

Edith's birth on the 19th April 1874 at the Rhostir in Minera, Denbighshire was announced in a local paper. She was the daughter of Joseph Morcom and Ann Evans. [1]

Her birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1874 in the Wrexham district.[2]

In the 1881 census Edith (age 7), Scholar, was the daughter of Ann C. Morcom at 4 Yorke St, Wrexham Regis, Denbighshire, Wales.[3]

In the 1891 census Edith (age 16) was the daughter of Annie C Morcom in Liverpool, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[4]

Career

Edith's father died when she was only 5 [5]and her brother, Llewelyn died a few months later. Two more of her brothers, Reginald and John, died before she was 20 and it was perhaps suffering in her own family which inspired Edith to take up nursing.

She trained at the West Derby Union, Mill Road Infirmary, Liverpool and the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan and received her certificate as a qualified nurse in 1900.

At the time of the 1901 census Edith (age 26) was a hospital nurse (nurse) in Chelsea, London, England.[6]

In 1911 census Edith (age 36) was living with her mother in Erw Bach, Lygan-y-Wern, Halkyn, near Holywell, Flintshire, Wales.[7]

Her mother died later the same year so perhaps she was there to take care of her in her final months. No occupation is given for Edith in the 1911 census but one of her posts was as Matron of the Cottage Hospital in Holywell, Flintshire.

In 1920 the Register of Nurses lists her as living at the Alexandra Home, Painswick, near Stroud, Gloucestershire. [8]

She was still living in Gloucestershire the following year as her name appeared in the 1921 electoral register for the county. .[9]

In 1923 Edith was appointed Matron of the Gloucestershire Tuberculosis Institution, Standish House, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire.

Other earlier appointments included:
The Brompton Hospital, London
Sister in the Infectious Diseases Wards of the City Hospital, Birmingham
Matron of the Cottage Hospital, Holywell, Flintshire
Tuberculosis Sister in the Mid Glamorgan area
County Nurse under the Gloucestershire County Council
Experience in management at the Alexandra Home, Gloucester
The Tuberculosis Dispensary, Cheltenham
Matron of the Cimla Hospital, Neath, South Wales [10]

Later Years

In the 1939 register Edith (age 65), Hospital Matron Retired, was the single head of household in Southport, Lancashire, England.[11]

Edith died on 10 August 1946 in Bournemouth, England. Her death (age 72) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1946 in the Bournemouth district.[12]

Probate was granted to her neice, Josephine Stobbs, on 13 November 1946 in London, England.[13]
