Biography

Susan Scott Metcalfe was an American mezzo-soprano who married Pablo Casals, the cellist.[1]

Susan Scott Metcalfe was born in 1878 in Florence, Italy, where her father practiced medicine. She was the daughter of Dr. Frank J. Metcalfe and Helene Rochat.[2][3][4]

Miss Metcalfe attended conservatories in Italy and France. She was a mezzo-soprano singer known in the United States and Europe. She met the cellist Pablo Casals about 1904 on one of her concert tours. They married April 4, 1914, in a civil ceremony before the large open fireplace of the Supreme Court of Judge Martin J. Keogh on Pelham Road in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York, USA. Judge Keogh was Susan's neighbor; she participated in his New Rochelle forum and sang in a recital for a forum meeting a few weeks before her wedding. This was his first time officiating a marriage, as civil marriages were more common in Europe than America at the time. Witnesses to the marriage included Susan's brother Louis Metcalfe, her mother, her sister Helen (Metcalfe) Kobbe and Helen's husband Herman Kobbe. The marriage certificate was then approved by the Spanish Consul in Manhattan.[5][4]

Susan Metcalfe Casals continued to tour as a singer. She gave a joint concert with Pablo Casals and a small orchestra from the New York Symphony Society on Saturday afternoon, January 8, 1915, at Aeolian Hall in midtown Manhattan, New York. It was her first appearance in America in several years.[6][7][8][9] She appeared at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, January 21, 1915.[10][11] They appeared at Aeolian Hall again Saturday, April 8, 1916.[12][13] Mrs. Casals gave a concert for the benefit of the European fund with her sister Mrs. Herman Kobbe in the Stockbridge Casino in Massachusetts Friday, September 1916.[14] She appeared at Aeolian Hall Thursday, December 7, 1916.[15] They gave a joint concert Monday, January 8, 1917, at Irem Temple in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.[16]

She passed away in 1959.[17]
