John was born on 6 June 1755 at Frederick County, Virginia. He was the son of John McMachen and Isabella Barnes. John, John McMachen's child, resided with John at Guilford County, North Carolina, in March 1773. As an inhabitant of the County, he signed a petition to Josiah Martin Esquire, Governor of North Carolina. He married Margaret Curley circa 1775.
