John Riley McCullough was the youngest son of James McCullough (1804–1864) and Nancy Ford (1807–1850), born on 5 Mar 1848 in Clay County, Indiana.[1][2][3]
John mustered into Company I of the 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery Battery, as a private on 29 Mar 1864. His Company performed garrison duty at New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and at various points in the Dept. of the Gulf from the summer of 1864 till Feb 1865. The regiment was part of the campaign against Mobile, Alabama, and its defenses 17 Mar-12 Apr 1865. This included the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely March 26-April 8, followed by the occupation of Mobile from 12 Apr and duty there until 24 Jun 1865. Companies "I" and "M" did garrison duty at Fort Pickens, Florida, until Jan 1866. John mustered out with his unit at Baton Rouge on 10 Jan 1866.[4][5]
After the war, John worked as a farm hand, appearing in the household of Sarah Slavens of Monroe, Putnam County, Indiana, in 1870.[6]
John married Alice Frances Jones (1857–1921) on 4 Nov 1877 in Saint Johns Township, Harrison County, Iowa. He farmed in Saint Johns Township, near the city of Missouri Valley, and they raised their children.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

John died on 13 May 1918 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Missouri Valley, Harrison County, Iowa. His obituary appeared in the Missouri Valley Times on 16 May 1918.[15][16]
John R. McCullough was born in Clay County, Ind., and died May, 13, 1918. He was the youngest son of James and Nancy McCullough.
He enlisted in Co. I, 1st Ind., heavy artillery and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He was a member of Belden Post No. 59 of this city.
He was ever a good soldier and citizen, a loving father and a Christian. He united with the Christian church in early manhood and transferred to the M.E. church in Mo. Valley 36 years ago, when Rev. Woodward was pastor. He was always a consistent Christian and was willing and ready to meet his Good. He leaves besides his widow, 3 sons and one daughter, Ed, at Mo. Valley, Earl at Ft. Dodge, Ia, Earnest at home, and Mrs. Kelsey of Missouri Valley, and two children deceased. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Hannah Kirkbride of Sulphur Springs, Arkansas and Nancy McClure, of Michigan, and Mrs. Mary Howell, of Farlington, Kansas, half-sisters. Two deceased brothers who served in the Civil War have widows living in Brazil, Ind. Mrs. Melissia McCullough and Mrs. Alice McCullough. There are ten grandchildren living.
